Remarks
The only good thing is it's a government college offering a professional course at an affordable price. But there are no placement as well as there are no girls hostel so its a big piss. No active participation of the college authority is found in any event. The college is good but I expected more from my college life.
Entrance Preview
Yes, there was an entrance conducted by Utkal University for admission into this integrated BA/LLB course. It is a competitive examination and has objective type questions. The Common Entrance Test is for admissions to the two law colleges under Utkal. I had previously set my aim of doing law. So I like they do for engineering and medical entrances, I had gone for coaching classes during 11th and 12th. I opted for this because somehow I have always had a knack for debates and such competitive things. My father then suggested that I go for law. I think that's what I am meant for.
Course Curriculum Overview
Course is very good but the facilities are not up to the mark. No proper classes are held. Most often there are discussions and only few lectures are held properly. We have to work a lot on our own but there is help from the college in improving our skill set. The focus on practical learning can be improved. Right now there are few seminar, paper presentations, mock courts or moot courts organised. We have a lot of the law to study and that is all the theoretical section is about. In practical side, we have to go through real cases in Indian history and learn how they were tried in court to get better as a lawyer. Also, no research initiative is taken till date in the college.
Internships Opportunities
No. It is a personal choice. We can opt out if do not want to do one. Anyway. the college does not arrange internships for us. Three are more than 5000 students in campus so I think it would be a mammoth task to find internships for all. Those who want to do one should do so during the breaks because attendance allowances are not made in college for internships.
Placement Experience
Placement is not guaranteed. There is no mention of it during admissions. We have to find jobs after college on our own. Mostly we are going to join law firms as practicing junior lawyers. It is that experience which will actually determine our future. Grades in college help us to join established lawyers during these training periods. Teachers also help through recommendations.
College Events
Yes, we have a national fest each year plus there are numerous miscellaneous competitions that go all round the year. The cultural fest of the college- Armonia - is a grand event. Students come to take part from all over India. The average footfall is over 5000 each year. It has various competitions, paper presentations and debate competitions as part of it. The musical and dance events are fun too. MUNs , Parliamentary Debates and Moot Courts are some other examples of the various events that happen across the year.
Fee Structure And Facilities
Yes, the fee is affordable. For a professional course such as law and with the kind of facilities that our college has I do think it is a quite reasonable amount. I pay a sum of Rs 35,000 only per annum. The course is for 5 years and the total charges will then be 1,75,000. It is a considerable sum but since we only have to pay it in parts over 5 years, I think it is affordable for everyone.
Fees and Financial Aid
No, we don't have scholarships from college. I hadn't availed any loan for my fees. It is quite low so I don't think anyone actually did take loans for the purpose. The college does not help us in getting loans even if there arises a necessity.
Campus Life
It's completely your call. Because competition goes all round the year. There are all the necessary sports equipment and the grounds and courts etc. If you want there are no restrictions but there isn't real encouragement for extra curricular activities either. The social services guild is a society in college that works among the people educating them about the importance of legalities and responsibilities of citizen. I am a part of it.
Hostel Facilities
There is no hostel facility for girls in our college. So those who live far off tend to look for houses to live in groups or for accommodations as paying guests. These PGs are comfortable and the food provided is also Okay. I don't stay at one, but this is what I heard from friends who do. It is not a great option but since we don't have college hostels this is the best they can get.
Alumni/Alumna
Yes, the alumni are very good. I have lots of friends among my seniors. Since ours is a 5 year course, we get to know lots of our seniors. They often visit to college. But the college don't organize such meets. There is no interaction with them in programmes that the college arranges. The alumni meeting every year is more like for the alumni only.
Exam Structure
Its a chill culture when it comes to exams. There are colleges where they have tests every week but our isn't that type. we have only two exams in a semester. They focus more on organizing events like discussions and debates through out the academic year. That is the factor that the faculty and the management alike stresses. I think it is good because, once we become practicing lawyers, the need will only be an understanding of the whole sections and sub-sections. It won't matter if we don't know it all by heart and word by word because I can present a case well after referring. It is how I am going to present that matters.
Faculty
They are highly qualified but there is a problem here. In college there are no permanent professors available. So it's really tough to give a review. Those that are here now are really good and helpful. There is no question about their interactions with students. They actively participate and at the same time encourage us to take part in discussions. Arguments and the knowledge of the criminal cases is excellent in a few. So, yes, teachers are very much interactive.
