Course Curriculum Overview
After graduating high school, I wanted to appear for the Join Entrance Exam to enter one of the IIT/NITs in a CS course. While under my JEE preparation, I developed a liking towards Mathematics and decided to broaden my course choices to CS, Maths or any combination of the two. After my JEE result was out, my score wasn't good enough to land me in any of the CS courses so I decided to go with this one. The faculty-to-student ratio is around 1:15 for professors (including assistant and associate professors) While the professors are well-qualified on paper, there are only a handful of them that can really teach. Since SVNIT was originally an engineering school, the professors for applied maths subjects are better than the ones for abstract maths. The course doesn't even have an intro to proofs course, which every Maths course worth its salt should, and students are expected to learn that on their own. In a semester, there is a mid-sem and an end-sem exam which are easy to pass in.
Placement Experience
The placements for M.Sc. students start in the 9th semester and are carried throughout the 5th year. Most students in the M.Sc. departments choose to go for research and higher studies after completion of their courses. The rest are placed in companies like TCS, Tata Elxsi, Byjus, and Allen with an average CTC of 6.32 lpa. The highest placement ever in the department has been from Samsung at 20 lpa in 2021. Out of the 44 students that sat for placements in the year 2023, around 20 were placed. Most of the students who get placed do extra work on the side besides college work. I plan on doing the same and applying for companies off campus as well.
Fees and Financial Aid
The fee for this course is one of its plus points. Since it is a government college, the fees are lesser compared to private colleges and even within the institute itself, the fees per semester for Integrated M.Sc. students are lesser compared to the other engineering courses. However, B.Tech students are provided with fee remission and scholarships which Integrated M.Sc. students aren't. Internships in this course aren't guaranteed either, you need to find one on your own if you're interested in doing one. As far as jobs are concerned, most people joining this course end up in research or higher studies and the ones that are placed are in mostly fields like IT and teaching.
Campus Life
There is a freshers-party Kashish which is conducted 2-3 months after a new batch arrives. The annual college fest is named Sparsh which takes place in March-April. The annual tech-fest is called Mindbend and is conducted at different times each year. Interested students from any year can take part in these fests. There are an adequate number of books available in the college library for any subject and it also has a stationary shop attached for all academic needs. The library is air-conditioned and also has ample numbers of desks and chairs for studying. The college takes part in the annual inter-NIT sports competitions in a wide range of sports, but as far as inter-college competitions are concerned, there aren't any except for cricket and basketball. There is no football ground and the only ground in the college is poorly maintained, suitable only for casual cricket. The classrooms are equipped with chalkboards and projectors, which the professors use at their own discretion.
Admission
The admission process is the same as for any other NIT, you appear in the Joint Entrance Exams (Main) conducted every year and when the result is out and the counselling process begins, you fill up colleges in the order of your preference. You are allowed a college based on the marks you scored and your relative standing with respect to other aspirants. The application form, fees, exam dates, eligibility and other details can be found on the NTA JEE (Main) website which is the government body responsible for conducting the exams. The eligibility for the course is the same as the eligibility for appearance in the JEE (Main) exam.
