Remarks
Overall this is an awesome place to be and some of the most amazing brains of our country hang around with me. That really pushes me to better myself everyday. I'm glad I got a chance to experience all this. PS: There's a CCD outlet in the campus that has extremely discounted items, and given how much I love caffeine I can't get enough of this place.
Entrance Preview
I wrote JEE-Advanced 2016 to get admission to IITK. My rank in the exam wouldn't permit me to get a branch of my liking in an old IIT so I decided to go for an old IIT which was famous for it rigorous and excellent curriculum. I just opted for Materials Science and engineering on a whim.
Course Curriculum Overview
There's definitely a lot of focus on practical learning. I'm in my third semester right now and I've had at least two lab courses each semester. IITK really promotes research, every body knows that. What outsiders might not know is the large number of opportunities provided to students for research in inter-departmental fields. Only 40%(approx.) of the courses a student does during his/her time here are compulsorily departmental. The rest can be of any other departments with very few restrictions dependent on CPI.
Internships Opportunities
College provides internship for a lot of students and with really high stipends too, there's really no way to put a number on the average for me. But some extraordinary students also apply from other sources.
Placement Experience
Almost all students get placed here, well almost all who sit for placements. The rest opt for higher studies in their fields of interest. Facebook, Microsoft and Google are the big ones and whole bunch of others in other departments that I don't know of.
College Events
Antaragni (the cultural fest), Techkriti (the tech-fest) and Udgosh (the sports fest) are the major fest organised in the campus. These fests are really huge considering their budget is more than 2 crores. Approximately 5-6K people show up for the first two events. The students manage all the stuff related to the events and the fund comes from the huge number of sponsors.
Fee Structure And Facilities
Since IITK is a govt. funded institute, the fee is absolutely affordable considering the facilities provided here. As for the fee structure: Semester fee for tution/admin. : 109K Monthly Mess bill (vegans/non-vegans) : 3K/5-6K {there's a basic fee of around 2K and the rest is for the extra dishes served everyday, fruit juice, BR ice-cream....} Electricity bill monthly: ~Rs.500
Fees and Financial Aid
Yup, the college provides a whole bunch of scholarships for all kinds of people, but unfortunately I fall in a very small category where the only scholarship I can avail is merit based. And believe me when I say it's really some thing to get one of those at a place like IITK.
Campus Life
Anything and everything you can possibly imagine to pick up as a hobby, is already being done by loads of other people at one of the tens of clubs in the campus. There is no limit (mentally, physically you might get exhausted after all this) to what you can learn and do here.
Hostel Facilities
I'm currently staying in Hall of residence 2. We stay in the same hall for the first three years of our time here, before we can move to one of the two halls allotted to the fourth year students. In our first year, we had to adjust with three people in a room. And frankly in hall the rooms aren't that big and cosy at all. But second year on wards we get to have doubly occupied rooms. One more thing for the readers, the halls here were numbered as they were made. So hall 2 is one of the oldest halls here, latest being hall 12 and it's infra is just awesome.
Exam Structure
IITK is famous even among IIT's for having a really rigorous curriculum. After the mid semester exams, one weekend you're chilling and suddenly there are quizzes lined up every weekend for next three four weeks. And assignments, a new assignment shows up before you're finished with the first one, there no end to them. But if you are not going to your bed tired enough then you're not making the most of your time at this wonderful place full of opportunities and stuff.
Faculty
The faculty is obviously top notch both in qualification and experience. But they are mostly research scholars so some of them might not be too interactive. But when it comes to explaining some concept or something they do it very well.
