What Students Say
Likes
- One of the best thing at the campus is the Open Air Theatre(OAT). Movie screening at OAT give another level of vibe with friends
- Relative grading is also a game changer in academics and also impacts the campus life in general by reducing the load on students
- Freedom is at another level at the campus, you can go out of the institute and hostel at any time(even at 2:00 am) without any restriction which allowed to have many nighouts.
Dislikes
- Professors at the institute have too much power at the institute. They decide the syllabus for the course and give grades according to themselves and sometimes it is much like a dictatorship.
- The shops inside the campus charge a lot more than normal price which increases the cost of living.
- The hostel are not up to mark considering that it is an institution of national importance in India.
Course Curriculum Overview
I chose this course mainly due the institute reputation and the fact that Electrical is a circuital branch. The faculty:student ratio in the institute is fairly good and the faculties are very polite in behaviour too(except in some instances). The Faculties are well qualified and have pursued Doctorates from some of the best universities in the world. Their teaching style was very different from what I had seen in my past life. In total, the course consist of 8 semesters spanning over the period of 4 years. Each semester lasts for about 4 months, with the mid semester exams in the middle of the semester. The exams are pretty easy to pass, all thanks to relative grading policy in the institute.
Internships Opportunities
Like the placements, the internship opportunities are also at another level. The institute provide internship opportunities at the end of second and third year, although students can apply for external internships at any time.
Placement Experience
Students become eligible for placement after the 7th semester. The placement percentage is also top notch. More than 80% of the students who sit for placement are placed(for CSE students, it is generally above 95%). Offers are made by companies like Goldman Sachs, Qualcomm, Nvidia, Deloitte, etc. for roles like software engineer, consultant, data analyst, etc. The highest package offered is 2 crores(the 4 crore package was of off-campus placement) with an institute average of 26 lpa. Branch-wise, the highest package is offered to CSE branch, with MTH and EE following it.
Fees and Financial Aid
The tuition fee in the institute is 1 lakh per semester. After including hostel and other charges, the final amount becomes close to 1.5 lakh per semester(including personal expenses). For students whose family income is less than 5 lpa, 33% of the tuition fee is waived off and for SC/ST candidates, 100% of the tuition fee is waived off(There is no income criteria for SC/ST candidates). The institute also offers a plethora of scholarships. In total, there are more than a hundred scholarship schemes in the institute. Students can also apply for external scholarship if they want to do so.
Campus Life
The annual fest of the Institute is Antaragini, usually held in October. The sports fest of the institute is Udghosh, which takes place in September. The tech fest is known as Techkriti and is held in February. The P.K. Kelkar Library holds a huge amount of books and journals. The sports facilities at the institute are top notch, which also includes an Olympic-size swimming pool. It is very easy to pursue a hobby in the campus. Just name a hobby and there is 99% chance of having a club or a team associated with that hobby.
Hostel Facilities
The hostel in the campus is pretty basic. Boys are allotted double or triple sharing rooms and girls are allotted double sharing rooms. Hostel rooms are pretty small(especially double sharing ones) and include 2 or 3 beds, 1 ceiling fan, 1 or 2 tables and 1 or 2 chairs respectively for double or triple sharing room. The registration for hostel room is done on the reporting day and the room to be allotted is decided beforehand by the institute(you can't decide your room). The Hostel mess is somewhat good generally. But for someone who likes spicy food won't find the mess to be good. The menu is changed every month(though some item remains same).
Admission
The admission process was very simple. After clearing the IIT-JEE Advanced examination, the counseling takes place. The Josaa counseling then allots a seat in an institution based on your JEE Mains/Advanced ranks and filled choices. After the counseling, one has to report to the institution they are allotted to, where hostel accomodation is provided. Rest of the registration work is done online on the institute portal. I secured 171/360 in JEE Advanced 2023 and got AIR 3277. On the basis of my OBC-NCL rank(587), I was allotted B.Tech(EE) in IIT Kanpur. The registration process was mostly done in online mode(including document verification). Hostel allotment was, however, done in offline mode on the reporting day. The procedures related to admission to the institution can be found on the institute website during/after the counseling.
