Remarks
College Management tries to bend rules frequently without much consultation which sometimes hurts the students. For Eg fall semester was shifted from July to June and back to July without prior intimation. Students who had booked flight tickets were at loss. The language barrier though has been bridged to a large extent still exists. Overall the college tries to mend things which sometimes turns disastrous. The biggest problem that anyone notices first is the exuberant population. It is so crowded that sometimes you might feel lost. After all the college didn't turn out to be too bad as you slowly get used to the rules and regulations which initially do hurt. In the end what matters are friends and memories
Entrance Preview
I appeared for VITEEE in 2016 just a few days after JEE MAINS. The form is online and costs around 1000. The questions in the online-based exam were not too hard. My rank was around 15000 and I opted for mechanical engineering. I opted for VIT because I ran out of options and this college was the best of the lot I was left with. Also, VIT has been recognized as one of the best places for mechanical engineering by virtue of its collaboration with chapters like ASME
Course Curriculum Overview
The course curriculum is similar to all other colleges with the only notable difference being the guest lectures. College organizers guest lectures from time to time to keep the students in sync with the recent developments going on in the respective field. They mail the details of the guest lectures a day in advance on student mail Id that you will be provided in the first month itself. Most electives are industry oriented i.e to prepare the student more for the industry than for research. The point here doesn't imply that you are not provided research opportunities but are relatively low. Each semester we have soft skill classes thrice a week in which we are taught reasoning, etiquettes, coding, etc. Basically, also an industry-oriented approach which is not at all bad.
Internships Opportunities
The college doesn't provide internships but helps you get one. There is a catch here. You can win the goodwill of the professor and he may allow you to work under him or send you to work under his counterparts in IITs or any similar institution. You get emails from college during the internship season notifying about various internships and can apply for them. But most students do internships by themselves and submit the report to the faculty who in-turn cross-questions you about what you learn and other technical aspects of the same after which you are awarded a grade based on your performance.
Placement Experience
Placement is that golden word that has attracted so many students to VIT. It's a lucrative dream to lure you into the institution. All such things are quite common a misunderstanding about VIT. Here the 100% placement thing is true. Conditions applied you sit for the placements. You might get an opportunity to work in IT giants like TCS or Infosys if you don't make a cut in core companies. The placement package is decent like 6L/annum in dream companies for mechanical undergrads. Computer science students form a major chunk of the placement herd and not surprisingly bag the highest package even as high as 28L/annum. As high as 300 companies visit during the placement season and bring on decent packages. But overall a good CGPA complements the salary figure apotheosis.
College Events
Gravitas- A technical extravaganza in the month of September. It's one of the biggest technical fests in terms of sponsors and events. Stand up comedians are invited and showdown events like Robowars are held. Robowars holds the distinction of hosting India's biggest Robowars arena. Riviera- riviera is the cultural and sports fest of VIT. It is also one of the most sought after events in and around South India. Some of the biggest names in the Indian music scene and cinema arrive to entertain the crowd. A 10k run kicks of the Riviera which goes on for the next 4 days. Various sports tournaments are held involving participation from various colleges from Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh
Fee Structure And Facilities
Fee structure primarily depends on the rank you obtain in VITEEE. You will be provided with an acknowledgment form right after your counseling session having a proper fee break up of the payable amount. During my admission days, 1st 10000 rankers got 50000 scholarship per year and 25000 scholarship for 10000-20000 rankers. There is a subsequent increase in base fee after the 20000 rank threshold for subsequent 20000 ranks. The correct fee structure is available on the official college website. Roughly 11,00,000 comes up as your final total for 4 years including hostel and mess facility if you fall under the first category
Fees and Financial Aid
Loan facilities are offered at the VIT branch of Indian Bank. Many other banks also visit VIT during counseling to offer loans which is otherwise a hectic procedure. Scholarships are awarded first on basis of rank in VITEEE and can be scrapped anytime on failing certain given terms and conditions. Scholarships are also given to meritorious students in each branch, for keeping 100% attendance or exemplary performance in sports. Rajarajeshwari memorial scholarship is also given to eligible students whose parents annual income is below 1,00,000
Campus Life
The University boasts of more than 300 active clubs and chapters that organizers events ranging from trekking to dance. There is no dearth of opportunities in any fuels be it science, maths, English, Hindi, dance, drama, music, etc. With affiliations from Societies like ASME, SME, ACM, IEEE, etc you can hone your skills by getting accredited with such chapters. Many student clubs lie dormant and can be revived to make them functional again. Car and plane building teams give hands-on experience to students and have won many awards and accolades around many international racing events. Student politics is strongly discouraged on the University premises. A healthy interaction between girls and boys is encouraged but certain red tag security guards are deployed to keep a check on lovebirds. College has a healthy girl to boy ratio but student to teacher ratio is a bit high. No religious or ethnic discrimination is encouraged in college. The college infrastructure is above par with most Indian University standards. Labs are well equipped and we have a state of the art library with books on topics ranging from diverse subjects. College also has a swimming pool, ac gymnasium, tennis court, billiards pool, volleyball ground, and badminton court
Hostel Facilities
Hostel facilities are good. No frequent instances of power cuts or water shortages. Toilets are clean and rooms are well ventilated. You can get 2,3,4 or 6 bed AC or NON AC rooms depending on how early you register in the first year. Second-year onwards you need to sit in room counseling and students are called to select their rooms, roommates based on their CGPA. Each room has a cupboard, a table, a chair, and a bed for each student. Laundry services are available inside the hostel( not free). Rooms can be spacious depending on the block you get. Mess food is alright. They put up a menu on the notice board every month and food is served based on the same. The mess is clean and workers are jovial. But the food is good for filling stomachs. You get breakfast, lunch, snacks, and dinner at the stipulated time. You can opt-out of the hostel at any time after 1st year. Hostel in time is strictly followed i.e 9:00 pm for 1st years and 9:30 pm for seniors. Attendance is taken after in time every day
Alumni/Alumna
The alumni network is quite strong in vit. They have specialized alumni portals and an aluminum mail id is given to every pass-out to keep in touch with the University. Frequent alumni meet are organized and willing students can attend and share their experiences. Senior interaction with juniors is prohibited in the 1st year for the fear of ragging. The campus is strictly anti-ragging. From the second semester onwards you can join various clubs and connect with seniors who try to be of as much help as possible. College seniors are the bridge between you and FFCS. As FFCS is a bit complex to understand for newcomers seniors do play an important role. Brochures were distributed the last sem by a chapter called SAME to inform students about the intricacies of FFCS and hostel room counseling.
Exam Structure
The curriculum operates under CAL(Continuous Assessment Learning). Marks for each lab you attend corresponds to your final score. So each lab is important to attend. Although you have 75% attendance criteria which are mandatory it's advisable not to miss any lab. Lab records are uploaded on Student login where they are evaluated. Exams are held at legit intervals as CAT1( continuous assessment test 1), CAT2 which is an open book examination, and finally FAT( Final Assessment Test). You need to score a minimum of 40% in FAT to pass the subject. All subjects fall under relative grading (except soft skills) wherein your score is compared with the class average to grade you based on the performance of your class. Days are hectic if you have credits between 25-27 else you get ample time all through the day.
Admission
The process for admission is quite simple you get a date on which you need to show up at your desired campus after paying a demand draft of 50000 after which you shall be eligible for sitting in counseling. No need to panic about the big amount, the money is compensated in the college fee if you opt for a branch and continue pursuing it. If you have a better option in hand you can withdraw after the counseling in which case your 40000 will be refunded. You formally become. a student of VIT after you pay your fees the link for which is available at their website. Hostels are allocated on a first come first serve basis online. After joining the college within the first week you get your ID card. And as they say in VIT If wealth is lost, nothing is lost If health is lost, something is lost If an ID card is lost, everything is lost..
Faculty
Faculties are well qualified mostly M.Tech and PhDs at various posts depending on experience. Most of the newer faculties are from IITs or IISc or are GATE qualified. Faculties try to stick to the syllabus with an exception of a few who go the extra mile to teach the relevance and application. All in all, teachers try to complete the portion and most of them are good at teaching the prescribed syllabus. The medium of instruction is predominantly English
