Review from an average student

I chose this branch because of the rank I achieved in advance and I preferred low branch in top IITs rather than high branches in low IITs because of the amount of exposure we get here. Also, the curriculum is very well scheduled according to the skills required in real world application which prepares a student for the upcoming challenges and further life problems. There are 3 exams conducted every semester, 2 quizzes and 1 endsem for every course you tookup in that particular semester. Also, in some of the professional courses you get a chance to do a project which can also be counted as an evaluation parameter during the grading of the course. Some improvements which can be made are decreasing the load and required credits to complete the degree.

Different companies like JP MORGAN, Morgan Stanley, Sprinklr, Jane Street, Optiver, Goldman Sachs, and many big companies come for interns and many talented students get interns and probably PPOs in the companies, you need to make resume and apply in through portal provided by IITM, create your profile and company can shortlist you based on your profile for test and the interview is there. Also, you can takeup prof projects which provide detailed knowledge in specific field.

Students involved in B. Tech programme can sit for the placments in their 4th year, while students pursuing dual degree(DD) have to sit in their final yea i.e 5th year. Highest package crosses 2 cr abd average package around 15 lakhs per annum. Many large companies and big firms come for recruiting from campus placements. Software and Quant profiles generally provide highest package folllowed by Data Scientist, developers and core braches. Around 70-80 percent of the students get placed who sit for the placements. You can also pursue higher studies by not sitting in placements.

There are 2 types of fees for students staying in hostels, one is tuition fees and another is hostel and mess fees. Tuition fees are about 100000 per semester for every branch and can have little variation from branch to branch or from category to category. Hostel and mess fees are around 30000 per semester which includes accommodation and food provided by the mess inside the campus. There are many opportunities for getting scholarships according to category for SC/ST or financial situation for EWS and also some other alumni scholarships, KVPY Scholarship for research students who cracked the exam. Amount depends on scholarship you avail so it varies.

Overall experience of the life in campus is amazing with natural greenery, deer, monkeys and cats. There are two main annual fests held every year - Shaastra and Saarang. Shaastra is the technical fest of IIT Madras which is largely focused on tech competitions, hackathons and many more interesting technical kinds of stuff that makes you feel you are IITian. Saarang is the largest student-run fest in the country and it is just amazing with cultural performances and rock night, DJ night with amazing stalls for goodies and food. IIT Madras has a very large Central library comprising atleast 2 million books and journals following different interests and streams so there is a bulk of knowledge. Also, NSO is there for sports and Inter-IIT Conducted every year, this year IIT Madras lifted the general championship which shows we are simply the best at sports. Classrooms have different layouts and amazing experiences with good interaction between professor and his students.

Hostel facility vary from hostel to hostel. There are more than 20 hostels in IITM of which around 5 are for girls and remaining for the boys and one new is being built for foreign exchange students. We also have a guest house for accomodation of guests and parents who are visiting the institute. Rooms in hostel have electricity, cupboard, LAN port for internet connection etc. Washing machine is provided per wing and common bathroom is there. Also, water is provided common for the wing through RO system. Different mess are there for different menu and veg, non-veg and overall food quality is average. Hostel will autoatically be allocated once you get admission according to your batch.

To take admission in IIT, clearing JEE Mains and Advanced is necessary. After that, we need to apply through the JoSAA portal for getting admission into the NITs, IIITs and IITs through the JEE Main and Advanced ranks. I got rank around 5000 and in EWS category and got my admission in Mechanical Engineering in IIT Madras according to the rank list. You can get into different colleges according to the choices you fill in JoSAA before the declaration. Reservation benefits are availed in exam and in admission quota there are benefits for SC/ST, OBC and General EWS. JEE mains is of 3 hours and 2 attempts are taken and JEE advance is taken if you qualify after mains and it is of 6 hours. You can register for JEE before the deadline of application which can be found on NTA Website. All the details regarding mains will be provided including cutoffs, results. Improvements can be made by taking reviews of students for any scope of improvements that they feel can be made.
