Remarks
The college is a good one, with cultural diversity, good academics and great faculties for every course in the college.
Entrance Preview
Asutosh college always had a good reputation specially for arts and sciences studies. After finishing my plus 2 two, it had some criterias in mind, like i wanted to stay in Kolkata and study under the state university as i didn't want to spend a lot of money on my bachelor degree. I opted for journalism and mass communication though o was selected for other courses as well.
Course Curriculum Overview
The college follows the syllabus designed by Calcutta university and so the department can hardly improvise. The students are taught about the history of journalism, basics of communication, pr, advertisement etc in the first year. While the 2nd year is all about print media while the third year is about broadcast media.
Internships Opportunities
No. The college lacks in this side of the game, though one can apply for internships by themselves and the college's name take students a long way
Placement Experience
Before the final exam of the third year, companies get in touch with students for interviews. Though the Jobs offered are not lucrative and often not even in the field of journalism or mass communication. Often students find themselves being contacted for back office jobs in MNCs.
College Events
Saraswati puja- a puja is organised every year which is skipped by most students, only lovebirds stay back to help on the organisation of the puja. Independence day - never been to one, this is even skipped by the lovebirds as it is very hard to feel patriotic while studying in the state university where political unions rule everything.
Fee Structure And Facilities
The fees structure is very feasible. as it is a state college and under the state university the fee structure is very manageable. In 2014 the course fee was around 60k for the whole three years payable in three yearly instalments. Students can even opt for further instalments for the 20k a year.
Fees and Financial Aid
No. Only the students are allowed to pay the yearly fee in five instalments at the most. Nothing else is offered.
Campus Life
Campus life is mostly about unions and rallies. One should avoid as much campus rallies as possible. The fear of getting sucked into the whole mess of unions is pretty real. The rallies are like tributaries of bigger ones. The unions often entail a lot of violence. So one should avoid campus life altogether
Hostel Facilities
No mess or hostel facility is provided by the college. Though union leaders and their patrons turn the canteen pretty much into their drawing rooms. They simply grow old in University. One can easily find people there who have passed out seven to ten years before. But that can hardly be considered as a hostel or a mess.
Alumni/Alumna
The seniors are quite helpful and friendly. Ragging is non existent. Seniors are like friends and they treat juniors as their peers from the very first day.
Exam Structure
The college organises three exams a year. The first term, the second term and the third term. Those hardly matter, most students skip the college exams. The exams that matter are the end of the year board exams. The board examination had honours papers and pass papers. It works like any other bachelor course in Calcutta University.
Admission
After finishing my plus 2 two, it had some criterias in mind, like i wanted to stay in Kolkata and study under the state university as i didn't want to spend a lot of money on my bachelor degree. So i applied for various state colleges with very good to decent reputation. The procedure is pretty simple, one has to fill up an online form and wait for the merit list.
Faculty
The college has an excellent faculty comprising of experienced to young teachers with on field experience. The HOD is interactive and friendly with the students and so are the other members of the department. The infrastructure of the college is decent with media labs and huge classrooms.
