What Students Say
Likes
- The thing I like about my University is it's location that is shillong. The environment or climate here is incomparable to other national universities. The campus is surrounded with greenery. The campus stretch about 1200 acres.
- You will find people from all over the country. You can interact with them, moreover you can know about the life of people in the northeast. Faculties are good when it comes to teaching.
Dislikes
- Infrastructure needs a real upgrade, specially the law department building. Hostels are livable, but the basic amenities like drinking water, tap water is not good. Infrastructure needs a critical upgrade.
- You won't find much crowd inside the campus, excluding the main gate. Curriculum is old and needs amends, however as per the BCI direction the curriculum for law students might get an upgrade.
- The University doesn't give much placement, where no placement for law department at all.
Course Curriculum Overview
I chose this course (BALLB) because I wanted to study law and become an advocate. The curriculum offered in NEHU cannot be compared to those big NLU's as they are very active in making curriculum for their students. Here, at NEHU they basically impart you with theoretical knowledge and live you upto yourself. The curriculum needs serious improvement, and there should be optional papers. Many more elective courses and core courses are needed. The exams are not that difficult, but the faculties are very stringent in giving marks.
Fees and Financial Aid
The tuition fee or course fee is much less here compared to other universities that offer the same course. The complete cost of my graduation will only cost me less than 4 lakhs. Scholarships can be availed through NSP schemes and financial aid is given by the university. I have never heard about campus employment here, no one takes employment from the campus, except in exceptional cases where it's all upto you.
Campus Life
The annual fest is called the "Varsity" which takes place at the beginning of the year along with that there are multiple functions and events happening throughout the year. The library is very well maintained and digitalized and enough books can be found there. Classroom technology might defer from department to department. Extra-curricular activities are well established here. Clubs are there for students to join in.
Hostel Facilities
I live in the hostel so I'll give my review of the hostel that I live in. The hostel itself is livable, but the basic amenities like drinking water and tap water must be improved. The mess should also be improved, if not should be run by the government and not any private contractors. Hostels for males are easily accessible, but there's quite a bit of difficulty in getting hostels for female students. I also heard that PGs or rents are quite expensive here.
Admission
The admission process is very simple and it is done through the NEHU portal online. You have to keep checking for the notices on the NEHU website. Reservation is given 50/50 where half will be unreserved and half will be reserved with ST/SC, OBC, EWS, Ex-Serviceman, etc. There are two exams in every semester. Internals for 40 marks and End semester examination for 60 marks. The counselling is done in offline mode which is very unfavourable for those who are coming from afar. Moreover, you will not get a hostel on that day. You'll have to wait for a week or two. So, you either stay in a guest house or hotel or go back and return when you get your hostel. This aspect must be improved by the university. The counseling process should be done online.
Faculty
There are faculties for every paper, but no teachers for clinical courses in the beginning. So, we get to learn theory a lot, but less or no practical knowledge. The faculties are invested in teaching students, but again there are few faculty members who does not have interest. However, interacting with teachers is very easy, they are approachable and are ready to clear any doubts you have.
Interview Experience
In my department the HOD will interview every student who came for counseling. You'll be basically asked common things and no academic questions. Just get a bit of confidence and speak to the HOD and she'll basically select you without any hesitation.
