Course Curriculum Overview

5

The course is highly focused on theoretical mathematics. The emphasis on real analysis, abstract algebra provided a solid foundation in mathematics. The integration of courses in statistics, probability, computer science, and physics was very significant in making me choose the course The curicullum encourages research from an early stage. With options to work on projects with faculty, it lets us exlore our interests. Flexibility in electives is also very nice Reading projects are very helpful as a preparation to real worls "academia" The institute regularly hosts guest lectures. Exams are ususally very regular. Midsems and endsems dates are known at the start of the semester so we can prepare around that. The difficulty of the test is definitely appropriate to whatever we studied in the preceding weeks. There are also a lot of take home assignments instead of exams and similar stuff(not in the first year though)

Internships Opportunities

5

I havent applied for any internships here so mouthing off whatever came from a senior. There is this research programme called ReLaX that is a part of CNRS and you work in france paris saclay under researchers and gain amazing experience. The stay and everyting is funded by the programme and you get a stipend to spend

Placement Experience

4

The campus placements are mostly for MS DS students. Most of the students here in undergrad plan to go study further in mathematics, physics or computer science. They either continue and do their masters at CMI or choose to go elsewhere or directly join a PhD programme right after bachelors. I plan to pursue a masters and then a phd after my degree here. But outside CMI because CMI does not offer a physics masters course. Some of the major recruiters here are credit-suisse, Ernst&Young, TRDDC, Adobe, Zen Drive, Teradata, Freshworks. The maximum offer last year was 25.8 lpa and the year before that was 47 lpa. The median package is 18.6 lpa last year and 20.7 lpa the year before. Students here got internships at Morgan-Stanley, SKylark Drones, Intellect Design and many more

Fees and Financial Aid

The tution fee is 1,25,000 per semester. There are two semesters in an academic year. Apart from the tution fees, the hostel fee + mess fees + pther extras is 31,310 per semester. This amounts to 1,56,310 per semester or 3,12,620 per annum. The fees is adjusted according to inflation every year so expect a slight increase. There is a purely merit based scholarship given according to the performance in the entrance test. This scholarship includes full tution fees and a stipend of 5000rs every month. The fees is same for every category. The fees is on the higher side definitely but given the amazing professors and the exposure here is well worth it.

Campus Life

5

Its a small college, we have small fest. Its just 300 or so students so not a huge fest. We have a good bunch of internal events and not many external events. Theres also stems that happens during tesselate. STEMS is scholastic test of excellence in mathematical sciences. This is conducted for students from 8th grade to undergraduates all over india. They also conduct a workshop for the students that did well in stems. The library s well stocked and fully automated. There is a volleyball court and a football field in the campus. CMI also has a tie up with a nearby sports facility and our bills will be reimbursed if we do intend to use the services there. There aren't clubs per se but there are groups. Again, its just 300 people so nothing suer fancy but we have student seminars \, movie club, volleyball club and all that. There is also queer club. CMI is a very queer friendly place! There is also the grievance commitee which helps you with any problems you might have.

Hostel Facilities

4

The hostel room for undergards have 2 beds in each room. We have a table for each, a cupboard for each. The hostels are quite comfortable. They are not air condtioned so that might be a problem but they're very comfortable. There's a washer in ever bathroom for your laundry. Food is nice. Pretty hygienic. You can also buy juices or omelettes or the other healthy people stuff if you prefer them. There is also jain food if you want that. Hostel and mess is pretty affordable 31310 per semester which is 7827Rs per month. BSc undergrads must stay at hostel and there is no special registration process. Hostel does tend to get quite warm so you might want to get a table fan or someting of the sort.

Admission

I studied at IIIT-H last year before dropping out and joining here. I joined IIIT-H because it is also a research focused institute and I hoped to do more maths. The very intense computer science workload shooed me away. I also applied to BITS goa and got in for the physics programme. I chose Chennai Mathematical Institute over that because it has a far better curicullum. Admission process of CMI: If you are selected for any olympiad camps, you are directly admitted to CMI. The college conducts a test aroun mid-may. The test has two parts: objective and subjective. part A is mostly a screening test and whoever passes the cutoff for part A has their part B paper checked. You're admitted purely based on your performance on the test. If you did get an admission letter, you are also required to pass 12th grade or its equivalent. The cutoffs for the 2024 entry test are : 58/120(General Category and Males) 47/120(other categories) : With Scholarship Wthout Scholarship : 47/120, 39/120

Faculty

5

64 professors for around 300 students. There are alot of professors. The faculty is very approachable. Prof. Upendra is definitely my favourite. He is very graceful with the students. I absolutely struggled with a course he was teaching and he helped me so much to get on par with the class. There is no faculty I don't like so far. Another great professor I want to talk about is Prof H S Mani. He is a physics professor and he met NEILS BOHR! He is an amazing person. You can go talk to him about any physics topic and he will send you a paper related to that. The number of exams depend mostly on the course and the course instructor but roughly, there are 2 quizzes, 1 midterm, 1 endsem every semester for each course. The hardness of each course depends on the instructor again but since most courses are relatively graded, that shouldn't be a huge problem. The course curicullum is extremely relevant if you are considering getting into academia.

Other Applied Colleges

Birla Institute of Technology and Science - [BITS] | Master of Science [M.Sc] (Physics)

CMI has a significantly more rigorous maths course

International Institute of Information Technology - [IIIT] | Bachelor of Technology [B.Tech] (Computer Science and Engineering)

Not a huge fan of computer science in general. Also maths is just better at CMI

Course Curriculum Overview:

The course curriculum is well structured and relevant to current academic and real world needs,it hepls built astrong foundation knowledge especially in my field geography, the syllabus also supports preparation for competitive exams and higher education. Exams are conducted regularly and difficulties level is moderate, which helps in consistent preparation, however adding more practical assessments instead of only theoretical exams would be beneficial Overall the curriculum is good but it can be improved by including updated topics more hands on learning, and modern teaching methods

The courses are well structured and interesting espcially the social psychology and basic psychology papers. in a semester there are 2 internal exams and they will be at least a month apart from each other. as long as you study your course materials, the exams are pretty easy however otherwise it might be a tough one. the courses are well structured espcially the social and basic psychology. and in some semesters, there will be a reading period where students are encourged to go and read in the Library.. The Curriculum served as a base for Internships and basic understanding but it is required to do masters to get a job in psychology filed
