Remarks
If one, from a middle class family, dreams to become successful in life by staying in Kolkata, one should go for it. Seriously, it might not be the best but, apart from academics, it would surely open other gates for one to do something worthwhile. In short, GNIT is synonymous to success. On the other hand, one from a 'well-to-do' family, must opt for a different college as there are many out there better than this.
Course Curriculum Overview
Today, it's an autonomous university. Hence, unnecessary subjects are removed and the course curriculum has become easier and more efficient. Unimportant subjects which had nothing to do with the respective departments are no more in the syllabus, unlike other colleges. More important subjects are included in the syllabus and the classes have become more flexible, thanks to the teachers. As a result, equal emphasis is given to every subject. Also, the number of aptitude and group discussion classes have been increased to a record breaking number to make sure that students are prepared for their interview beforehand.
Placement Experience
Since the last three years, GNIT has provided almost 90% placement to the students. Companies such as TCS, Wipro, Infosys, Amazon, EaseMyTrip, Cognizant, etc. are among the top recruiters. Our college though, doesn't provide any internship per se however, special recommendations are offered to deserving students during the time of campus placements, which largely contributes in the success of those students during their recruitments.
College Events
Our college is the main spot for the 'All India Smart India Hackathon' which is a huge plus. Regular events are conducted for aspiring tech geeks. Fests are held twice a year which provides great exposure to students. Unlike other colleges, GNIT sponsors top 40 students every year to go to Bangkok for study workshops. 'Tech Innova' is yet another event in its kitty which is open to all and motivates students to do something new which would be beneficial to our society.
Fee Structure And Facilities
The fee structure is quite feasible. Even middle class people won't hesitate to give it a go as the engineering courses could be completed for four lakh forty thousand rupees only for four years(8 semesters). One could pursue BCA for three lakh eighty thousand rupees only for 3 years(6 semesters).
Fees and Financial Aid
Scholarship is available, but only to Sikhs. Apart from that, if one clears the WBJEE with desired rank under the 'Tuition Fee Waiver' scheme, one would get a minimum of 50% scholarship. However, that only holds if one's family has an annual income not exceeding two lakh rupees.
Campus Life
One word - Excellent. This is undoubtedly the best thing about thing about GNIT. The principal supports in all kinds of extracurricular activities and never hesitates to provide funds whenever required. There are even added perks if one manages to score big and win something for the college. Teachers are very cooperative in all these things. Labs are well equipped with all the desired devices and facilities. Annual sports is open to all to provide all round development to students.
Hostel Facilities
To be honest, the hostel infrastructure and facilities are not that good as one would expect it to be. Monthly charges are five thousand five hundred rupees only which includes both fooding and lodging. The security provided is top notch however, the food and rooms are below average. Bathrooms are also not cleaned regularly.
Alumni/Alumna
Seniors are very helpful provided one manages to build a strong bond with them. Here, introverts are not at all welcome by anyone. There's extraordinary unity among them hence, if even by mistake one commits a mistake unknowingly, one would definitely have a hard time till one's whole tenure of college as they never spare anyone.
Faculty
Overall, I'd like to give a mixed review on this. Pardon me but some of the teachers are really annoying and non-cooperative whereas, the rest are pure gems. There are way too many experienced and highly educated teachers who are always ready to help. Their friendly approach is just an added bonus to their teaching skills. Starting from sports to excursion, they are always there to lend a hand in every activity. Extra classes and surprise tests are also taken by them quite often just to make it sure we aren't completely detached from our studies. The notes given by them are of great help. In short, they are enough to pass every examination with flying colours.
