Likes
- University campus is situated at the best location that is in chandigarh. Good transportation facilities are available. Lot of Greenery which keeps you alive and fresh. Most importantly crime rate in chandigarh is low, which gives sense of safety.
- Located in the heart of chandigarh. Campus is really beautiful and well planned. Central library facilitybis also available. Each department has it's own library.
- Moreover, cultural diversity is also present. Which helps in the holistic growth of a student, providing him with necessary exposure.
Dislikes
- Placement cell of most of the department are not active. Only two departments namely, UBD and UIET are involved in placement drives.
- Less faculty ratio in comparison to students. Most of yhe department do not have permanent faculty, they work with guest faculty.
- University students are greatly involved in university and students politics.
Course Curriculum Overview
PU GEOGRAPHY DEPARTMENT IS WELL KNOWN AND WELL ESTABLISHED DEPARTMENT. IT IS CONSIDER AS THE FIRST SCHOOL OF POPULATION STUDIES IN INDIA. The curriculum integrates physical, cultural, human, regional, social, economic and political geography together. Emphasis on research and field work alings with professional and academic growth. Practical study of gis and remote sensing equips the students with skills in high demand across various sectors such ad townplanning and urban development. Emphasis on research studies is beneficial for enrollment into PHD programs. There needs to be improvement , incorporating more industrial oriented modules like artificial intelligence in geography. There is a semester system along with internal assessment, practical and viva.
Fees and Financial Aid
Year wise tuition fee of masters in geography is 12,000 per semester and the examination fee is 3800rs. Fee is less for reserved category. Fee is increasing at 5% every year. Other state scholarship and government scholorship is also available.
Campus Life
Sytrone, chesscon etc are conducted in the university. Inter University Annual youth fest is also conducted. My fest are conducted. For sports person many facilities such as ground, badminton court, swimming pool, boxing court and gym facilities are available. All the range literature and books are available at central library at A.C. joshi library. Each department has it's own library. However there is no such clubs available. Student ate greatly involved in student politics.
Hostel Facilities
Reading room, common room, washing machine, gym area, guest room , parlour, tailor room mess and canteen are available. Quality meal is service at 43 per diet. 6000 is the fee fo one semester, which is very reasonable. Along with 1900 security fee. Only the students with merit gets the hostel. 10-12 seats are available per department, per course. Naya gaon, khuda lora and sector 15, 24 are available with PG rooms
Admission
I applied on DU, but the cutoff was very high. However i don't regret as department if geographyin Punjab University is very reputed and well known. For admission into the department, PU conduct it's entrance test, which is of moderate level.
Faculty
The faculty to student ratio at PU varies depending on ths course and department. However it is low in most of the department. Faculty members are generally very approachable and open door policy is available. Faculty is generally loved by the students for their expertise in the respective fields, engaging teaching style and willingness to mentor beyond classroom. Sometimes complaint are made for faculties outdated method of teaching and low envolvement in the classroom. PU follow semester system with internal assessment And end semester exams. Some courses include viva practical.Failure rate is typically low but increased in the professional courses. Course curriculum is updated periodically but sometimes lags in incorporating latest industry trends.
Night Life
University gym is available. Each department has it's own Library and cafeteria, which are open 7am-7pm. Central library is 24*7 accessible. There are 11 hostel for girls and 8 for boys, with all the facilities available. University Market is also present within the campus. University is situated at the heart of the chandigarh, rose garden, rock garden, sukhna lake are close for amusement.
