Bilaspur University - Review

Bilaspur University is a place that allowed students from economically challenged backgrounds to live their dream of higher education. Although the facilities provided by the University are not up to the mark, it seems fair for a fee of INR 6000 for a year. Placement is almost nil, but there is a lot to learn. Some of the faculty members are quite thorough in their teaching, explaining every topic in great detail.

The course material which I studied was quite thorough. The curriculum also lacked the element of practical knowledge, which is an essential part of the overall learning of a student. Apart from that, many of our faculty members would be absent due to some government duties.

There is no placement process as such in the University. The students have to look for a job on their own. Though there are companies like Utkarsh Small Finance Bank and TISS which visit the campus. Although, I decided to prepare for competitive exams.

Many skill development and Job oriented certificate courses were organized in the university. We also got to attend some guest lectures by eminent personalities. Various national seminars, workshops and conferences for skill development and up-gradation in the subject were also organized. Games, NCC, NSS, and other activities were also available here. In our college, we celebrated different types of festivals like annual function, games, SCINEX Millenium and other curricular activities.

First-year fee for my M.Sc. Computer Science program was INR 6,000. Though the fee was nominal, the facilities provided were negligible. Hostel seats were limited. The central library in the college was the main attraction. The technical devices were also limited and not even up to the standards. There was a shortage of faculty every now and then. Inadequate sports equipment.

Bilaspur University provides numerous fellowship options to the students excelling in their specialization. In addition to that, our University also offers scheme-wise scholarships on various levels.

The campus life was good at the university. The campus was filled with lush greenery. The infrastructure was the key highlight, although I had some hygiene-related issues at the University. We usually remain engaged with various cultural events taking place almost every month.

Bilaspur University organizes exams biannually. So we used to have the exam at the end of each semester. But the results were always delayed. There were instances when we don't know the result of the previous semester, but the exam dates for the next semester would be released. It was very frustrating.

I applied online on the official website of the university and paid the necessary application fee. After that, I gave a University conducted entrance exam. 40 % weightage is given to my graduation marks, while the entrance exam had a weightage of 60%. I secured a seat in the university, after clearing the merit list. Post that it was only the documentation process.

University has well-qualified teachers in a few departments. While in the other departments knowledge is not as important as attendance. In our computer science department, only a few faculty members were permanent, while the rest were the guest faculty. Industry exposure was entirely absent. The student-faculty ratio was 60:1 which is bad from the quality point of view.
