IIT Madras is best college for the students on India who do not get admission in IIT Bombay. With very less pollution inside the campus due to forest and beautiful destinations like Puducherry, Ooty, Mahabalipuram, Rameshwaram just a few hours away, the time which you will spend in college will be the ost memorable time of your life. You can get into the college and perform okay in academics and still get placed in top companies of the world

Course Curriculum is open for all the branches. A person in civil engineering can complete courses of computer science. For B. Tech., students have to complete 436 credits to get the degree. Each course has 8, 10 or 12 credits based on difficulty. Every week there are 3 classes and 1 tutorial class for each course.

College invites companies for internships which is very rare in engineering colleges of India. One can sit for the internship exams of each comany and then company decides the shortlist. Interviews are taken and on an average 5 people are selected by each company. Pre placement offers are given to promising students. Stipend can be as high as 1.5 Lakhs and as low as 15k Rs. International opportunities are also there.

Let us come to placements, despite being a civil engineering student, I can sit for finance, coding, consulting, management, teaching, analytics, FMCG and other profiles. More than 500 companies come for placements and internships every year. Salary package is very high as compared to most of the colleges in India. Some of the top companies include McKinsey & Company, Bain, Google, Apple and Facebook.

There are two famous college fests called shaastra and saarang where top Indian singers, foreign rock bands and Indian standup comedians perform every year. Every hostel organizes hostel night for graduating seniors. Freshie night is organized for freshies to show their talent. E-cell organizes its own fest which gives opportunities to work in various startups and meet with top entrepreneurs of India. Institute celebrates all the festivals.

Fees in IIT Madras is considerably lower than other colleges. Just around 2 lakhs per year. Hostel fees is around 50,000 per year. Students with poor financial background and those who belong to weaker sections of the society do not have to pay any fees. They can opt for scholarships.

Institute provides MCM scholarship for students those who have family income of less than 5 Lakhs per year. Dean-Alumni scholarship is provided to those who have family income of less than 6.75 lakhs in which they are eligible for 25% waiver in fee. Interest free loans are provided by Canara bank and SBI Banks. Alumni run their own scholarship program. Students who perform well in academics are given fee waiver.

IIT Madras has an international cricket ground called Chemplast ground where players like Murali Vijay come for practice whenever they are in the town. Ranji matches keep happening every year.We have free of cost Gym, swimming, and all other sports facilities in the campus.

There are world class restaurants inside the campus like CCD, Wow Momos, Zaitoon, etc. Outside the campus, there is Phoenix mall with Dominos, Pizza Hut, Subway, Burger King, Inox Movies, etc. Every hostel has a huge ground in the middle with gardens, cricket nets, football arena and volleyball grounds. There are around 14 clubs like fine arts, cooking, etc. for engaging in co-curricular activities.

Seniors are not allowed to interact with juniors of first years to prevent any incidents of ragging. Seniors are extremely helpful for progress of a student. There is a vast Alumni network called IITMAA, where students and alumni can interact with each other online.

For each semseter, general practice is to organise 2 quiz of 20 marks each and then an end semester exam of 60 marks. Passing marks are generally around 36 for each course. Exams are mostly subjective. Very few online exams are also conducted. Grading is relative and GPA is provided after each completion of each course.

Admission for B. tech.(4 years) and Dual degree (B. Tech. + M. Tech. in 5 years) are based on merit list of JEE Advanced exam conducted by Govt. Of India. To be eligible for JEE advanced, one must clear JEE mains. Reservation is available for weaker sections of the society. There is a special quota of 10% for girls. Once JEE Advanced is cleared, students fill their choices of colleges and branches. The student with higher rank gets the priority. Once the college is allotted, we have to visit college to confirm the admission. Both JEE Mains and Advanced happen twice every year.

IIT Madras has world class faculty. Many professors are recruited by Govt. of India as well as top companies of the world for consultation jobs. They have their own research labs and offices. They guide students to complete their project and thesis. Many professors go to colleges like MIT (USA) to give lectures. Faculty is very helpful and available for students. It focuses on personality development of students.
