What Students Say
Likes
- The library has all the books I need for study and I do not need to buy books from outside. Moreover, the online resources and journal subscriptions we have are just fantastic for research papers.
- There is a lot of exposure with reference to competitions, societies and events. We get enough scope to find our voice in some way or the other.
- The professors are absolutely fantastic with regards to approaching their syllabus.
Dislikes
- Strict attendance policy (below 75% per class student gets debarred from writing papers)
- My day batch has classes from 10:10 to 3 pm or 4 pm on half the days making it really difficult for me to devote time to other activities or attend physical internships
- I wish statistics had been included within our economics syllabus a bit earlier than teaching it from second year onwards full fledgedly. I believe computer softwares relating to data analysis should be a part of our course in each semester.
Course Curriculum Overview
Economics is a great course. It is heavy and robust with reference to the authors we study like Mankiw, Caves&Jones, Froyen, Hal Varian, Rubenfield and Michael Hoy. The books are very standard and exhaustive. I believe statistical methods in economics should be taught a bit earlier than second year. Moreover, I believe the curriculum doesn't provide much space for technical learning unless we take statistics as our minor paper. We have 2 exams per semester:- mid semester exams and end semester exams. Papers are pretty standard to slightly tricky.
Internships Opportunities
There are multiple roles offered to students via the placement cell. They range from HR, finance, operations, marketing, social media management, technical roles, etc. Kolkata startups are often contacted for the same.
Placement Experience
We have a placement cell helping students get placed. They keep posting opportunities like internships and fellowships throughout the year to groom students and give them exposure and experience. Placements can go to very high packages like those in Data Science, Big 4 consulting or core finance or banking jobs. CAs, CFAs and FRMs do well in the placements. The highest packages could surpass 12-13 LPA and median packages are close to 6-7 LPA. DE Shaw, Zomato, Myntra, Meesho, TCS and McKinsey are some top companies coming here.
Fees and Financial Aid
The fees is payable in instalments collected before the mid semester and end semester examinations. My fees as a day batch student is Rs 85000 (rounded off) In my understanding, SXC fee structure is one of the cheapest among private colleges. The BCom Evening batch for instance is more expensive than the BCom Morning batch which is subsidized as SXC is a minority institution. Financial aid is available in the form of scholarships. A scholarship portal exists where students can enter their credentials and apply for scholarships.
Campus Life
The societies are fantabulous. The experience is absolutely mind boggling. Someone asked me in a commerce-allied society interview that I am in a desert and I need to sell someone a raincoat. I was given a minute to prepare a pitch leaving me awestruck but I somehow managed one! Competitions go hectic. There are too many already in the first place and we often tend to lose track of things…unable to decide which events to join and which ones to leave. We have consulting, finance, entrepreneurship, marketing, TEDX, NSS,NCC, Enactus, commerce, management, economics, fine arts and and sociological societies and clubs. It is just too much to grab.
Hostel Facilities
Hostels are nice and well maintained. We apply for rooms. There are provisions for single, double and triple sharing rooms. We get nutritious meals though quite repetitive with reference to rice being served each day. Nevertheless, we get 3 meals per day with tea twice each day.
Admission
I applied only to SXC in the private college space. I took CUET and got Hansraj College for BCom Honours. I chose SXC and am not regretting it at all. With the exception of better internships and a more flexible attendance policy, I pursued my dream course here. I do not mind leave Delhi University. The process involves satisfying cutoffs deoending on class 12 board exam scores.
Faculty
All my professors are PhD holders barring one person who is presently completing his PhD. One professor teaching environmental economics completed her environmental economy education from Japan. Our HOD is a seasoned academician. He is my favourite as he leaves our class with a question he solved in the next class making us think about solutions. Most professors are approachable within college hours. Some even allow online conversations for doubt clearing. Some professors are quite strict about timings for classes. Their notes come in handy during exams. Papers range from moderate to difficult. However, studying with regularity makes exams manageable.
Night Life
I do not hang out a lot. Nevertheless, Delights is a place outside college that becomes almost a go to place for many people each break. Park Street shops and restaurants are close by. We may often check them out as well.
