What Students Say
Likes
- The faculty members are largely knowledgeable and experienced in their respective fields which makes the academic guidance and mentorship effective.
- Another thing is the academic environment is nice as it encourages critical thinking. There is constant participation in debate as well other kind of competitions which keeps the students engaged and academically active.
- The college infrastructure is also functional and adequate. Classroom and libraries are equipped with basic facilities and amenities that are needed for academics.
Dislikes
- The placement and internship opportunity for students needs to be advanced more.
- The curriculum is strong in theory, however more focus must also be given to hands-on learning and practical experience which would better prepare students. .
- The library section can be diversified more, with addition of more books as there is only limited number of books available which most of the time falls short as compared to a class strength.
Course Curriculum Overview
I would rate the course curriculum as moderately relevant and comprehensive. The syllabus is well-structured in terms of theoretical coverage and provides a strong foundational understanding. However, the practical relevance is limited, which slightly affects the learning experience. As per me, the areas for improvement in the Course Curriculum and Teaching Methods are 1. Greater practical exposure, for example, conducting workshops and fieldwork. 2. Inclusion of skill-based modules. 3. More interactive teaching methods so that students can really enjoy learning. As already said, the frequency of exams is that in the 6-months of semester, every third month we have our exams. The difficulty level is generally moderate and high, which is memory-based, and also incorporates a little practical thinking.
Internships Opportunities
There is an Internship Committee in our university that helps students choose their internships. The committee has students representing every year, and thus, they help their batch students to find internships. There is a list of internship places available on the website, where students have previously done their internships, and there too students can apply. Also, the Internship Committee releases a communique for students to find an internship. From their side, students can also apply for an internship at the places of their choice. Regarding the stipend, it depends on the companies and roles applied for. Big corporate companies like Fox and Mandal provide a stipend, while small law firms do not. Overall, these internship opportunities help students in improving research, writing, and analytical skills and also increase practical expose of law.
Placement Experience
To be honest, I don't know much about the placement mechanism at my University. Most of the students mainly go for LLM, either in India or abroad. Other than this, some go fo judiciary examination. In terms of campus placement, every year, on average, 15 students get placed out of the strength of around 60 students. Students, on the other hand, secure placement on their end too. My plans after getting the degree are to first practice in court, and then attempt the judiciary examination.
Fees and Financial Aid
The annual fee that has to be paid in our university is Rs. 2,53,600. The detailed structure is: 1. Tuition fee: Rs. 88000 2. Admission fee: Rs. 10000 3. Examination fees: Rs. 8000 4. Campus Development Fund: Rs. 7000 5. Library fee: Rs. 7000 6. Internet Services Fee: Rs. 10000 7. Journal Fee: Rs. 2500 8. Internship Placement Fee: Rs. 5000 9. Student Welfare Fund: Rs. 5000 10. Mess Fee: Rs. 40000 Regarding the scholarship, every year my University also provides for Merit Cum Means Scholarship. The scholarship is basically provided in three categories: 1. Merit Cum Means Scholarship Scheme for Boys: 30% of the total amount available under the scholarship during a particular financial year. 2. Merit Cum Means Scholarship Scheme for Girls: 40% of the total amount available under the scholarship during a particular financial year. 3. Merit Cum Means Scholarship Scheme for students afflicted by natural disaster/accident/financial hardship: 30% of the total amount available under the scholarship during a particular financial year.
Campus Life
ANNUAL AND TECHNICAL FESTIVALS Mostly around a year, 1annual and 2 technical festivals take place. The annual festival is called Abhiveera, and it is typically held in the months of May and June. LIBRARY AND ACCESSIBILITY Apart from this, if I talk about the library facilities, the library has almost all the books needed for academics and curriculum reference, and it is mostly accessible. The range is basically for major books, mainly 20 to 25 copies of it normally available. Regarding journals, the accessibility is good. Apart from physical books and journals, digital accessibility is also available. CLASSROOM FACILITIES About the classrooms, it is adequately equipped with basic teaching aids such as projectors, audio systems, and seating arrangements suitable for lectures. However, there is a need to manage them more effectively. SPORTS AND EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES Our campus offers basic sports facilities, and extracurricular option both for both indoor and outdoor games, such as badminton, table tennis, volleyball, cricket, as well as other kinds of games. In terms of extracurricular activities, cultural events, debates, seminars, and competitions are organised regularly. STUDENT-RUN GROUPS, CLUBS, AND PORTALS Mainly, there are different centres in our University, like the Centre for Disability. These centres basically cover different aspects and are student-led. Although there are professors assigned to each centre and for leading us. Apart from these is the Student Bar Council, which is there for putting up the student grievances with the authorities, which is a student-led body selected through the campus elections. SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT AND STUDENT LIFE Overall, the social environment on campus is generally positive, with students interacting with each other, contributing to an inclusive atmosphere.
Hostel Facilities
In our university, till 2nd year, every student has to live in a double room, in which two students live. From third year, every student gets a single room. In both the types of the room, all the facilities are available, there is bedding, a table, and an almirah each. Every wing has a common washroom with 4 washrooms in total. Then there is a common area to dry our clothes. Then there is a paid washing machine facility also available, which students can avail. Other than this, there is a common room, and gym facilities available. Maids almost on all days come to clean the rooms. The hostel also provides mess facilities, and provides decent food, so meal quality all in all is good only. The only problem is that the menu become repetitive throughout the 6 months period. The fee for hostel and amenities is around Rs.33000, and this amount is included in the annual fees. I think the fees is quite extra as compared to the amenities provided, but its okay. I live in hostel only and not in rent or PG.
Admission
Basically, I took the CLAT exam, and in that, I got selected for NLU Assam. There were other options of other NLUs too, which are lower in ranking than NLU Assam, but my family decided that I should go here only because some of my close relatives, mainly my mother's side relatives, live here too, which made the place a good option. So other than NLU Assam, I did not applied in any other colleges as such. The admission to my college takes place through the CLAT examination only. The eligibility is to clear the exam and have a reasonable ranking in it. I am not aware of the cutoffs because it varies every year and more or less also depends on the CLAT consortium. My overall admission experience was good. There was a lot of academic processess which was troublesome but otherwise it was good only.
Faculty
The faculty-to-student ratio is fairly balanced. Students mostly have reasonable access to professors both inside and outside the classroom. Also, professors are generally approachable and open to discussions and doubt clearance. Professors themselves also encourage discussions to connect every student in the class. One of the faculty members whom I liked was Professor Kasturi Gakul, who taught us Property Law in the 5th semester. She is really vocal and knowledgeable regarding her subject, which makes the study session really fun with her. Apart from her teaching style, I also liked her personality, and that is why I liked her. Other than this, every faculty member is good. One faculty member whom I did not like is Dr. Shailendra Kumar. He taught us CPC this semester, and he is knowledgeable, too. But the only problem with him is that he lacks the art of teaching students, and also, he is not so fluent in English, which makes his lecture boring for most of the students. We have a 6-month semester in our University, and in that 6-months, two exams take place. One is mid-semester, and one is end-of-semester. Mid- semester is for 25 marks, and end-semester is for 50 marks. Our exam pattern has been changed, and now we have problem based question, and the difficulty varies with the subject. So it depends on the subject. But mainly, it is medium to great difficulty only. I would say the course curriculum is not that relevant, and it needs to be decided more mindfully so that it can really serve the purpose.
Night Life
The nightlife in and around the college campus is fairly limited but decent. Talking about the gym, both boys' and girls hostel has an in-built gym with basic amenities provided. The campus has two cafeterias too, which are normally open till 8:00 P.M., and you can find almost everything to eat and munch on. The library is open from 9:00 A.M. to 12:00 A.M at night. The university is basically situated on the outskirts, so by 9:00 p.m. everthing closes. The university has a fixed-in time rules, which are 9:00 PM. Inside the campus, you can roam till 12:00 AM. After that, the hostel gates are closed, so you have to be inside the hostel. Inside the campus, students usually hang out in common rooms, campus, lawns, or canteen areas. Through late-night conversations and other fun activities among student groups, students generally unwind their day. Outside, people hangout in nearby cafes and outing places.
