What Students Say
Likes
- Great location. Brighton is a great city, super safe and welcoming and the beach is a plus.
- Good ranking and credibility for marketing.
- Good financial support options (awards, scholarships and other hardship funding)
Dislikes
- Brighton is less expensive than London but more expensive than some other student cities like Leicester, etc. (in my limited experience)
- Could use more practice and practical experience alongside uni theory.
Course Curriculum
- Highly relevant theory and good research skills training.
- Its a one-year course, so no industry placement. But multiple research skills training opportunities and a whole semester for your own research project.
- Between 1 and 3 classes in a day. Doesn’t get too busy and is spread out over the week, Monday-Friday
- My batch had 35 students, I believe.
Admission Experience
- I always wanted to study abroad at some point in time. When this decision came around, I researched my interests, narrowed in on consumer psychology, and chose the University of Sussex for three key reasons, among others.
- A consumer psychology specific degree is only offered in about 5/6 universities in the UK, and in general across Europe and the US as well. I knew I wanted to specialise in this from a psychology and business perspective.
- I didn’t want to be in London, considering the cost of living, and I wanted a reputable school with a comprehensive program, one that went beyond just the name brand. So I did extensive research on the course details and modules. But I still wanted to be in a good city with good connectivity.
- Financial aid (tuition help) and my employability record made a difference for me. I received £7k in fee reductions, and that was a great reason to reconfirm my choice of uni.
- SOP with personal direction, good references (academic and/or professional), IELTS 6+ -> my score 8 band, BA 2:1 or higher (60%+) -> my score 92%.
Faculty
- The faculty at Sussex is extremely approachable and very helpful.
Campus Life
- One campus in Falmer, Brighton and Hove. Many clubs for psych, music, sports, student council, etc.
Part Time Jobs
- Part-time salary per hour in Brighton ranges from £12 to £ 15, depending on the hours, type of job, and level of flexibility. Campus jobs pay higher but typically have fewer shifts.
- Max 20h per week during term time—40 h weeks in vacations. Apply for part-time roles by going door-to-door with your physical CV and applying through online portals and the university career hub.
Placement
- Sussex’s employability rankings and data are published on their website. I’m not aware of the current numbers. But a good percentage find employment. I do not have information on salary averages, as they vary based on location and position.
- After graduation, popular methods for finding job applications include online job boards, internal job boards for companies, referrals through networking, and cold outreach.
Accommodation
- Research online via Google and the University of Sussex web FAQs. My rent was roughly £980 for uni accom. It would have been cheaper to rent outside, but I preferred being on campus for the year. I had an ensuite bathroom, Wi-Fi, and bills included in this rent
