IGNOU Ph.D. (Food and Nutrition) FAQs

Ques. What is the specific UGC NET subject required for IGNOU PhD Food and Nutrition admission?

Ans. Candidates must qualify UGC NET in Home Science to be eligible for IGNOU PhD Food and Nutrition (PHDFN). This is a specific requirement unique to this programme, unlike many other IGNOU PhD programmes where NET in the same subject is required. Ques. What are the research areas available under IGNOU PhD Food and Nutrition?

Ans. The programme covers six major thrust areas: (1) Clinical and Therapeutic Nutrition and Dietetics focusing on dietary management of non-communicable diseases like diabetes, obesity, and coronary heart diseases; (2) Public Nutrition with focus on adolescent and maternal health, child malnutrition, and micronutrient deficiency; (3) Health Care and Promotion; (4) Geriatric Care and Nutrition; (5) Sports Nutrition; and (6) Food Safety and Quality Control.

Ques. Is IGNOU PhD Food and Nutrition a distance learning programme?

Ans. No, IGNOU PhD (Food and Nutrition) is NOT a distance learning programme. Both Part Time and Full Time PhD students must physically attend the 6-month coursework at IGNOU's main campus in Maidan Garhi, New Delhi, with mandatory 80% attendance. After the coursework phase, research work can be carried out with periodic visits to the supervisor.

Ques. How many seats are available for PhD Food and Nutrition at IGNOU?

Ans. The number of seats is very limited. For the July 2025 session, only 3 seats were available (UR=1, SC=1, ST=1). A PhD in Food and Nutrition from IGNOU opens doors to careers in academia (Assistant Professor in Home Science/Nutrition departments), research institutions (ICMR, NIN - National Institute of Nutrition, CFTRI), hospitals and healthcare organizations as clinical dietitians and nutrition researchers, government health departments, food industry (R&D roles), NGOs working in public health and nutrition, and international organizations like WHO and UNICEF.

Ques. Can a candidate with M.Sc. in Dietetics or Public Health Nutrition apply for IGNOU PhD Food and Nutrition?

Ans. Yes, candidates with M.Sc. in Food and Nutrition, Dietetics, or Public Health Nutrition from a recognized institution are eligible, provided they have at least 55% marks (50% for reserved categories) and a valid UGC NET score in Home Science.
