SASTRA B.Sc. + M.Sc. (Physics) FAQs
Q1. What is the difference between the 5-year integrated M.Sc. Physics and the regular 2-year M.Sc. Physics at SASTRA?
Ans. The 5-year integrated programme is designed for students entering directly after Class XII. It combines B.Sc. and M.Sc. Physics into a single 10-semester curriculum, allowing students to complete both degrees in 5 years. The regular 2-year M.Sc. Physics is for students who already hold a B.Sc. degree. The integrated programme provides a more cohesive and uninterrupted learning experience and saves one year compared to pursuing B.Sc. (3 years) and M.Sc. (2 years) separately.
Q2. What is the total fee for the B.Sc. + M.Sc. (Physics) integrated programme at SASTRA?
Ans. The total course fee is Rs. 2,04,750 for the entire 5-year programme. This includes tuition fees of Rs. 20,000 per semester (Rs. 2,00,000 for 10 semesters) and a one-time special/registration/medical fee of Rs. 4,750. There is no development fee for this programme category.
Q3. What career options are available after the integrated M.Sc. Physics from SASTRA?
Ans. Graduates can pursue careers in research institutions (IISc, TIFR, BARC, ISRO, DRDO), academia, defence technology, semiconductor and electronics industries, data science, and financial modelling. Many graduates also pursue Ph.D. programmes in India or abroad. The strong analytical and computational skills developed during the programme make graduates versatile across multiple sectors.
Q4. Is the integrated M.Sc. Physics programme suitable for students who want to pursue competitive exams like CSIR-NET or GATE?
Ans. Yes. The 5-year integrated M.Sc. Physics curriculum at SASTRA covers all the core topics tested in CSIR-NET (Physical Sciences) and GATE (Physics). The programme's strong theoretical and mathematical foundation prepares students well for these national-level competitive examinations, which are gateways to research fellowships and postgraduate admissions at premier institutions.
Q5. What research opportunities are available for Physics students at SASTRA?
Ans. SASTRA has active research groups in areas such as condensed matter physics, photonics, nanomaterials, and computational physics. Students in the integrated programme are encouraged to participate in research projects, summer internships at national laboratories, and collaborative research with faculty. SASTRA also offers a Summer Research Internship Programme in Mathematics and Sciences, which Physics students can benefit from.
Q6. Is hostel accommodation available for B.Sc. + M.Sc. (Physics) students at SASTRA?
Ans. Yes, hostel accommodation is available on the Thanjavur campus for both boys and girls. First-year students are provided shared accommodation. From the second year onwards, options include single, 2-in-1, 3-in-1, and 4-in-1 rooms, with or without AC and bath-attached facilities. Hostel lodging fees range from Rs. 16,000 to Rs. 90,000 per year depending on the room type. Food charges are approximately Rs. 5,000 per month, payable at actuals.
