SCAD M.Arch FAQs
Ques. Is a B.Arch degree mandatory to apply for the M.Arch (Urban Design) programme at SCAD?
Ans. Yes, the M.Arch (Urban Design) programme at SCAD requires candidates to hold a B.Arch degree (5-year programme) or an equivalent qualification from a recognised university with a minimum of 50% aggregate marks. Candidates with a relevant bachelor's degree in architecture or planning from a UGC/CoA-recognised institution may also be considered.
Ques. Is NATA required for M.Arch admission at SCAD?
Ans. No, NATA (National Aptitude Test in Architecture) is required only for B.Arch (UG) admissions at SCAD. For the M.Arch (PG) programme, admission is purely merit-based on the marks obtained in the qualifying B.Arch degree. No entrance exam is mandatory for M.Arch admission.
Ques. What is the difference between M.Arch in Urban Design and a regular M.Arch programme?
Ans. The M.Arch in Sustainable Urban Design at SCAD focuses specifically on the design and planning of urban spaces with an emphasis on sustainability, environmental sensitivity, and community-centred design. Unlike a general M.Arch which may cover a broader range of architectural specialisations, this programme is tailored for students who want to work in urban planning, smart city development, landscape architecture, and sustainable infrastructure design.
Ques. What are the career opportunities after completing M.Arch (Urban Design) from SCAD?
Ans. Graduates can pursue careers as urban designers, urban planners, landscape architects, sustainable design consultants, project managers in real estate and infrastructure, and faculty in architecture colleges. They can also work with government bodies such as CMDA (Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority), TNHB, and Smart City Mission projects, as well as with private architectural firms and urban development consultancies.
Ques. How many seats are available for M.Arch (Urban Design) at SCAD, and how competitive is the admission?
Ans. The M.Arch (Urban Design) programme at SCAD has a seat intake of 20 students per batch. Given the small intake, admission is competitive and merit-based. Candidates with strong academic records in their B.Arch programme and relevant design portfolio experience are preferred. Early application is strongly recommended.
Ques. What facilities are available for M.Arch students at SCAD?
Ans. M.Arch students at SCAD have access to dedicated architecture design studios, model-making workshops using clay and various materials, a well-equipped library, computer labs with design software, and seminar halls. The campus is part of the 180+ acre SIMATS campus in Thandalam, Chennai, which also offers hostel facilities, canteens, sports facilities, and a 24/7 library. Students also benefit from national and international study tours and workshops organised by the college.
