BHU BA {Hons.} (Shastri) FAQs
Ques. What is the Shastri degree and how is it different from a regular BA in Sanskrit?
Ans. The Shastri is a traditional Sanskrit honours degree that is unique to institutions like BHU. It is equivalent to a BA (Hons.) but follows a classical curriculum rooted in the traditional Gurukul system of Sanskrit education. The Shastri covers Sanskrit grammar (Vyakarana), Vedic literature, Indian philosophy (Darshana), Dharmashastra, and Sanskrit poetry and prose in much greater depth than a regular BA in Sanskrit.
Ques. Is prior knowledge of Sanskrit required for admission to BA (Hons.) Shastri at BHU?
Ans. While the official eligibility only requires 10+2 with 50% marks, a strong background in Sanskrit at the 10+2 level is practically essential. The programme is conducted largely in Sanskrit and covers advanced topics from the first year itself. Students without prior Sanskrit training will find the course extremely challenging.
