The Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) is a prestigious higher doctorate degree awarded in recognition of outstanding, original, and sustained contribution to knowledge through published research work. Unlike a conventional PhD, the D.Sc. is not a taught or coursework-based programme; it is conferred on the basis of a body of published research work submitted as a thesis, evaluated by an expert panel including international examiners. The programme is governed by the BHU D.Sc./D.Litt./LL.D./Vachaspati Ordinances, 2005. The degree is available across all faculties of BHU and is one of the highest academic honours the university confers. The total fee for the programme is Rs. 13,050 (for Indian candidates), making it highly accessible for eligible researchers. The D.Sc. is particularly valued in academia and research institutions as a mark of exceptional scholarly achievement.

Admissions to the D.Sc. programme are open throughout the year, with the last date for submission of the application form being July 31 of each academic year. There is no entrance examination; eligibility is based on the candidate's academic qualifications, research record, and published work. The 2026 application cycle is expected to follow the same pattern, with the deadline of July 31, 2026 for submission to the Controller of Examinations, BHU.

Key Points

  • The D.Sc. is a higher doctorate - it is awarded on the basis of a body of published research work, not through coursework or a conventional PhD-style research programme.
  • The candidate must have a PhD degree (from BHU or any recognised university) obtained at least 4 years prior to the date of application.
  • The thesis must consist of published research work from the last 5 years, with at least two papers solely authored by the candidate.
  • The thesis is evaluated by two external examiners, one of whom must be from abroad - ensuring international peer review.
  • The degree is available across all faculties of BHU including Science, Arts, Social Science, Medicine, Ayurveda, Agriculture, Law, and more.
  • Permanent teachers of BHU with at least 4 years of service and a PhD are also eligible to apply.

BHU D.Sc FAQs

Ques. Is the D.Sc. at BHU a taught programme or based on published work?

Ans. The D.Sc. at BHU is entirely based on published research work. It is a higher doctorate, not a taught or coursework-based programme. Candidates submit a thesis comprising their published research from the last 5 years, which is then evaluated by an expert panel including an international examiner. There are no classes, coursework, or regular attendance requirements.

Ques. Can a candidate with a PhD from another university (not BHU) apply for D.Sc. at BHU?

Ans. Yes, provided the candidate has obtained a PhD from any recognised university or a foreign university of standing, at least 4 years prior to the date of application, AND holds a Master's and/or Bachelor's degree from BHU. If the candidate's PhD is from BHU itself, the Master's/Bachelor's degree condition does not apply.

Ques. How long does the entire D.Sc. process take from application to award?

Ans. After admission, the candidate has up to 1 year to submit the thesis. The thesis evaluation by external examiners typically takes 2-3 months. If the thesis is accepted without revision, the degree is awarded in the same year as submission. If revision is required, the candidate has 6 months to 2 years to resubmit. In total, the process from application to degree award typically takes 1.5 to 2.5 years.

Ques. What kind of published work is required for the D.Sc. thesis at BHU?

Ans. The published work must be from the last 5 years before submission, must be original and scholarly, and must make a distinct contribution to the advancement of knowledge. It should include research papers published in reputed journals and/or books/monographs/book chapters. At least two of the works must be solely authored by the candidate (not co-authored). The work must not have been previously submitted for any other degree or diploma.

Ques. Who evaluates the D.Sc. thesis at BHU?

Ans. The thesis is evaluated by a Board of Examiners consisting of two members - one expert from India (outside Varanasi) and one from abroad. The panel is recommended by the Faculty Research Committee (FRC) and appointed by the Vice-Chancellor. If even one examiner recommends rejection, the thesis is rejected. Both examiners must unanimously recommend acceptance for the degree to be awarded.

Ques. What is the difference between a D.Sc. and a PhD at BHU?

Ans. A PhD at BHU is a research degree pursued over 3-6 years through original research under a supervisor, culminating in a thesis. It is open to postgraduate students. A D.Sc. is a higher doctorate awarded to established researchers who already hold a PhD and have made outstanding contributions to their field through a body of published work over several years. The D.Sc. carries greater prestige and is typically held by senior academics and scientists. The D.Sc. does not require a supervisor or coursework.
