Ques. What is Jain Darshan and why should I study it at BHU?
Ans. Jain Darshan refers to Jain philosophy, one of the oldest and most intellectually rigorous philosophical traditions of India. It covers Jain metaphysics, epistemology (including the unique doctrines of Anekantavada and Syadvada), ethics, and cosmology. BHU is one of the few universities in India with a dedicated Department of Buddha and Jain Darshan, offering specialised faculty, access to rare manuscripts, and a rich academic environment for the study of this tradition.
Ques. What career options are available after MA Jain Darshan from BHU?
Ans. Graduates can pursue careers in academics and research (PhD in Jain Philosophy, Indology, or Comparative Religion), teaching at Sanskrit colleges and universities, Jain religious and cultural institutions, and manuscript research centres. Many students also appear for UPSC Civil Services with Philosophy as an optional subject, where Jain philosophy is a significant component. Ques. Is CUET PG the only way to get admission to MA Jain Darshan at BHU?
Ans. Yes, admission to MA Jain Darshan at BHU is based exclusively on CUET PG scores. Candidates must appear in CUET PG conducted by NTA and must have opted for BHU at the time of filling the NTA application form. There is no separate BHU entrance exam for this course.
Ques. What is the medium of instruction for MA Jain Darshan at BHU?
Ans. The medium of instruction is primarily Sanskrit and Hindi. Students are expected to have a working knowledge of Sanskrit, as the course involves reading and interpreting original Jain philosophical texts such as the Tattvarthasutra of Umasvati and commentaries by Jain Acharyas.
Ques. What is the difference between MA Jain Darshan and Acharya in Jain Darshan at BHU?

MA Jain Darshan is a modern postgraduate degree programme equivalent to a Master of Arts, while Acharya in Jain Darshan is a traditional Sanskrit degree (equivalent to MA) offered under the traditional Shastri-Acharya system. Both are 2-year programmes, but the Acharya programme follows a more traditional Sanskrit-based curriculum. The MA programme is more aligned with the modern university system and is recognised for government jobs and further academic pursuits.
Ques. Is hostel accommodation available for MA Jain Darshan students at BHU?
Ans. Hostel accommodation at BHU is available but not guaranteed, and is allotted on a first-come, first-served basis subject to availability. BHU has separate hostels for male and female students. The hostel fee for male students is approximately Rs. 5,375 per year (excluding mess charges). Students are advised to apply for hostel accommodation immediately after securing admission.
