The MA (Sankhya Yoga) is a 2-year full-time postgraduate programme offered by the Department of Sankhya Yoga under the Faculty of Sanskrit Vidya Dharma Vigyan (SVDV) at Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. Sankhya Yoga is a combined study of two of the six orthodox (Astika) schools of Indian philosophy: Sankhya (the school of dualistic metaphysics and cosmology) and Yoga (the school of spiritual discipline and liberation). Sankhya provides the theoretical framework of Purusha (consciousness) and Prakriti (matter), while Yoga provides the practical path of liberation through the Ashtanga Yoga system of Patanjali. The course spans 4 semesters and is offered in on-campus mode. Total tuition fees for the entire 2-year programme are Rs. 4,000, making it one of the most affordable postgraduate programmes in the country. Admission is based on CUET PG scores, and the programme is popular among students of Sanskrit, Indian philosophy, and Yoga studies.

Admissions for the 2026-27 academic session are upcoming. CUET PG 2026 is currently ongoing (March 13 - April 1, 2026), and BHU PG counselling is expected to begin tentatively in May-June 2026 based on the previous year's schedule. Students who have registered for CUET PG 2026 and opted for BHU should monitor the official BHU admission portal (bhucuetpg.samarth.edu.in) for counselling registration dates.

Key Points

  • Sankhya Yoga combines two classical Indian philosophical schools: Sankhya (dualistic metaphysics and cosmology) and Yoga (spiritual discipline and liberation), offering a comprehensive understanding of both theory and practice in Indian philosophy.

  • The programme is housed in the Faculty of Sanskrit Vidya Dharma Vigyan (SVDV), one of the most distinguished faculties for classical Indian studies in the country.
  • The course is particularly relevant for students interested in the philosophical foundations of Yoga, Ayurveda, and Indian spiritual traditions.
  • Graduates can pursue careers in academics, research, Yoga education, Sanskrit colleges, and civil services (UPSC Philosophy optional).

BHU MA (Sankhya Yoga) FAQs

Ques. What is Sankhya Yoga and what does the MA programme cover at BHU?

Ans. Sankhya Yoga is a combined study of two classical Indian philosophical schools: Sankhya (the dualistic metaphysical system that explains the universe through Purusha and Prakriti) and Yoga (the practical system of liberation through the Ashtanga Yoga of Patanjali). The MA programme at BHU covers the foundational texts of both schools, including the Sankhyakarika of Ishvarakrishna, the Yogasutras of Patanjali, and their major commentaries, along with advanced topics in Indian metaphysics and spiritual philosophy.

Ques. Is this MA Sankhya Yoga the same as a Yoga teacher training course?

Ans. No, MA Sankhya Yoga at BHU is an academic postgraduate programme in Indian philosophy, not a practical Yoga teacher training course. While it covers the philosophical foundations of Yoga (including the Yogasutras of Patanjali), the focus is on textual study, philosophical analysis, and academic research. Students interested in practical Yoga teacher training should look at BHU's separate programmes in Yoga Science or other institutions offering TTC (Teacher Training Courses).

Ques. What are the career prospects after MA Sankhya Yoga from BHU?

Ans. Graduates can pursue careers in academics and research (PhD in Indian Philosophy, Yoga Studies, or Sanskrit), teaching at Sanskrit colleges and universities, Yoga research institutions, and Ayurveda colleges (where Sankhya philosophy is foundational). The course also provides a strong foundation for UPSC Civil Services with Philosophy as an optional subject. Opportunities also exist in cultural heritage organisations and Indological research centres.

Ques. Is CUET PG mandatory for admission to MA Sankhya Yoga at BHU?

Ans. Yes, admission to MA Sankhya Yoga at BHU is based exclusively on CUET PG scores. Candidates must appear in CUET PG conducted by NTA and must have opted for BHU at the time of filling the NTA application form. There is no separate BHU entrance exam for this course.

Ques. What is the medium of instruction for MA Sankhya Yoga at BHU?

Ans. The medium of instruction is primarily Sanskrit and Hindi. Students are expected to have a working knowledge of Sanskrit, as the course involves reading and interpreting original texts such as the Sankhyakarika, Yogasutras, and their classical commentaries.

Ques. Is hostel accommodation available for MA Sankhya Yoga students at BHU?

Ans. Hostel accommodation at BHU is available but not guaranteed, and is allotted on a first-come, first-served basis subject to availability. BHU has separate hostels for male and female students. The hostel fee for male students is approximately Rs. 5,375 per year (excluding mess charges). Students are advised to apply for hostel accommodation immediately after securing admission.
