BHU MA (Vedanta) FAQs
Ques. What is the difference between MA Vedanta at BHU and Acharya in Vedanta?
Ans. At BHU, the MA (Vedanta) and Acharya in Vedanta refer to the same postgraduate programme offered under the Faculty of Sanskrit Vidya Dharma Vijnana. The "Acharya" degree is the traditional nomenclature used in the Sanskrit/Vedic education system, equivalent to a Master's degree (MA) in the modern university system. Both are 2-year full-time programmes offered by the Department of Vaidic Darshan.
Ques. Which schools of Vedanta are covered in the MA (Vedanta) programme at BHU?
Ans. The programme covers all major schools of Vedanta philosophy, including Advaita Vedanta (as propounded by Adi Shankaracharya), Vishishtadvaita (Ramanujacharya), Dvaita (Madhvacharya), and other sub-schools. Classical texts such as the Upanishads, Brahmasutras (with major commentaries), and Bhagavad Gita form the core of the curriculum.
Ques. Can a student with a BA in Philosophy (not Sanskrit) apply for MA Vedanta at BHU?
Ans. A student with a BA in Philosophy (without Sanskrit) is generally not eligible unless they have studied Sanskrit in all the years of their Bachelor's degree. The eligibility requires either a Shastri degree with Vedanta as a subject, or a Bachelor's degree with Sanskrit studied in all years, both with a minimum of 50% marks. Students with only Philosophy (without Sanskrit) background should check the specific eligibility criteria in the BHU PG Bulletin before applying.
Ques. What are the career options after MA Vedanta from BHU?
Ans. Graduates can pursue careers in academia (as lecturers/professors in Sanskrit, Philosophy, and Vedanta departments), research (PhD in Vedanta, Indian philosophy, or comparative religion), religious and spiritual institutions, cultural organisations, and government bodies promoting Sanskrit and Indian knowledge systems. Many graduates also pursue careers as spiritual teachers, writers, and translators of classical Sanskrit texts.
Ques. Is hostel accommodation available for MA Vedanta students at BHU?
Ans. Hostel accommodation is available at BHU but is NOT guaranteed. It is allotted on a composite merit basis, giving weightage to the distance of the student's home from the university (up to 20 points) and marks obtained in the entrance test (up to 80 points).
