The Master of Arts in Vyakarana, offered under the Faculty of Sanskrit Vidya Dharma Vijnana at Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi, is a 2-year full-time postgraduate program (officially designated as "Acharya in Vyakarana" - PG0285 - in BHU's nomenclature). Vyakarana refers to Sanskrit grammar, and this program is rooted in the study of Panini's Ashtadhyayi, the foundational text of Sanskrit grammar, along with Patanjali's Mahabhashya and Katyayana's Varttikas. The course provides advanced training in Sanskrit grammatical analysis, linguistic philosophy, and the traditional Vyakarana Darshana (philosophy of grammar). The total tuition fee is Rs. 4,000 for the entire 2-year course (Rs. 1,000 per semester), making it one of the most affordable postgraduate programs in India. The program is offered in full-time, on-campus mode at BHU's main campus in Varanasi, and admission is based on CUET PG scores.

Admissions for the 2026-27 session are upcoming. CUET PG 2026 has been conducted from March 13 to April 1, 2026, with results expected around May 6, 2026. BHU's CAP-PG registration for CUET PG 2026 qualified candidates is expected to open tentatively in May-June 2026, with the last date for registration likely around June 2026 (based on the 2025 pattern where registration closed on June 10, 2025).

Key Points

  • The program is centered on Panini's Ashtadhyayi, one of the greatest intellectual achievements in human history, providing students with mastery over the most systematic grammar ever devised.
  • The curriculum includes Ashtadhyayi, Mahabhashya (Patanjali), Vakyapadiya (Bhartrhari), and Siddhanta Kaumudi, offering a comprehensive grounding in Sanskrit grammatical tradition.
  • BHU's Department of Vyakarana is one of the most prestigious centers for Sanskrit grammar studies in India, with a long tradition of distinguished scholars.
  • Students develop expertise in Sanskrit linguistic analysis, which is valuable for research in Sanskrit literature, Vedic studies, computational linguistics, and philosophy of language.
  • The program is ideal for students who have completed Shastri (Hons.) in Vyakarana and wish to pursue advanced scholarship in Sanskrit grammar.

BHU MA (Vyakarana) FAQs

Q1. What is the difference between MA (Vyakarana) and Acharya in Vyakarana at BHU?

Ans. They are the same program. BHU officially calls it "Acharya in Vyakarana" (PG0285) under the Faculty of Sanskrit Vidya Dharma Vijnana. The "MA" designation is used in common parlance and in some databases. The degree awarded by BHU is "Acharya," which is recognized as equivalent to a Master's degree.

Q2. What is the eligibility for MA (Vyakarana) at BHU?

Ans. Candidates must have passed Shastri (Hons.) or Shastri in Vyakarana with at least 50% marks in aggregate from a recognized university. SC/ST candidates are exempt from the minimum percentage requirement. Admission is through CUET PG scores.

Q3. What are the key texts studied in MA (Vyakarana) at BHU?

Ans. The key texts include Panini's Ashtadhyayi (with Katyayana's Varttikas and Patanjali's Mahabhashya), Bhartrhari's Vakyapadiya, Nagojibhatta's Paribhashendusekhara, and Bhattoji Dikshita's Siddhanta Kaumudi. These texts form the core of the traditional Vyakarana Darshana.

Q4. What career opportunities are available after MA (Vyakarana) from BHU?

Ans. Graduates can work as Sanskrit grammar teachers in schools and colleges (after qualifying UGC NET/SET), researchers in Sanskrit linguistics and computational Sanskrit, scholars in Vedic and classical Sanskrit literature, and can contribute to Sanskrit language preservation projects. PhD in Vyakarana is also a popular next step. Government positions in Sanskrit academies and Kendriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha are also available.

Q5. Is Vyakarana relevant for modern linguistics or computational studies?

Ans. Yes. Panini's Ashtadhyayi is considered a precursor to modern formal grammar and has influenced computational linguistics. Scholars trained in Vyakarana are increasingly sought for Sanskrit NLP (Natural Language Processing) projects and digital humanities research. BHU's program provides the traditional foundation needed for such interdisciplinary work.

Q6. How many seats are available in MA (Vyakarana) at BHU?

Ans. The seat intake is very limited, typically in the range of 10-20 seats per year across all categories. The exact number is notified in the BHU PG Admission Bulletin each year. Due to the niche nature of the program, competition is relatively manageable compared to mainstream MA programs.
