Ques. Is NIFT Delhi the only campus offering the PhD programme?
Ans. Yes. The NIFT PhD programme is offered exclusively through the NIFT Head Office in New Delhi (Hauz Khas). Candidates from across India and abroad must apply to and attend the New Delhi campus for their doctoral research.
Ques. Can I pursue the NIFT PhD while working full-time?
Ans. Yes. NIFT offers a Part-Time PhD option specifically for working professionals. The part-time programme allows thesis submission within 6 years (extendable to 7 years). Candidates must, however, be able to attend NIFT Delhi for coursework, seminars, and interactions with their supervisor as required.
Ques. What research areas are available for PhD at NIFT?
Ans. NIFT PhD research spans Design (fashion design, textile design, accessory design, creative pattern making), Management (fashion retail, supply chain, brand management, sustainability), and Technology (textile technology, garment manufacturing, sustainable materials, wearable technology). Interdisciplinary and trans-disciplinary research is also encouraged.
Ques. Is there a written test for NIFT PhD admission, or can it be waived?
Ans. The written test can be waived for candidates who hold a Master's degree with a minimum of 10 years of professional experience in the relevant research area, or those who hold a valid score in UGC NET, CEED, or CSIR JRF. All other candidates must appear for the two-hour written test comprising objective and descriptive sections.
Ques. What is the NIFT Teaching Fellow (NTF) scheme for PhD?
Ans. The NTF scheme allows NIFT to recruit outstanding full-time PhD scholars who also contribute as teaching fellows. For 2026, 20 NTF seats are available. Five EWS/SC/ST candidates receive a 100% tuition fee waiver, while the remaining 15 receive a 50% tuition fee waiver. The maximum age for NTF candidates is 30 years.
Ques. What are the career prospects after a PhD from NIFT Delhi?
Ans. NIFT PhD graduates typically pursue careers in academia (faculty positions at NIFT and other design/fashion institutes), research and development roles in the fashion and textile industry, policy and consultancy roles with government bodies (Ministry of Textiles, DPIIT), and leadership roles in fashion brands and retail organisations. The NIFT brand and its strong industry network provide significant career advantages for doctoral graduates.
