Ques. What are the research areas available under the PhD in Law at Amity Law School, Mumbai?
Ans. The programme covers a wide range of legal research areas including constitutional law, corporate and commercial law, international law, human rights law, criminal law, environmental law, intellectual property rights, cyber law, family law, and alternative dispute resolution. The specific research topic is finalised in consultation with the assigned research supervisor after admission.
Ques. Is the UGC-NET in Law required for admission to the PhD (Law) programme at Amity Mumbai, or is it just for exemption from APET?
Ans. UGC-NET in Law is not mandatory for admission. It is used for two purposes: (a) exemption from the APET (Amity PhD Entrance Test) - candidates with valid UGC-NET scores need to appear only for the interview, and (b) as a qualification for the Amity Research Fellowship (ARF) stipend of Rs 37,000 per month. Candidates without UGC-NET must appear for the APET.
Ques. Can a candidate with an LLB degree (without LLM) apply for the PhD in Law at Amity Mumbai?
Ans. Generally, an LLM (Master's degree in Law) with minimum 55% marks is required for PhD admission. However, candidates with a four-year Bachelor's degree in a relevant field with minimum 75% marks may be considered for direct admission in Full Time mode as per UGC regulations 2022. A standard 3-year LLB without a Master's degree does not qualify for PhD admission.
Ques. What is the minimum attendance requirement for Full Time PhD scholars at Amity Mumbai?
Ans. Full Time PhD scholars must maintain a minimum of 75% attendance in each course to be eligible to appear in end-semester examinations. Additionally, for promotion to the next semester, Full Time scholars must attain a minimum of 90% attendance out of total working days in each semester; failing which, the Semester Progress Report may be marked Unsatisfactory.
Ques. How is the Comprehensive Examination conducted, and what happens if a scholar fails it?
Ans. The Comprehensive Examination is conducted after the completion of coursework and tests the scholar's knowledge in their broad field of research and academic preparation. It is a combination of written and oral examinations conducted by the concerned institution. Scholars must secure at least Grade B+ (7 points on a 10-point scale) to pass. The format and re-attempt policy are governed by the university's PhD regulations.
Ques. Is the PhD (Law) degree from Amity University Mumbai valid for teaching positions in law colleges?
Ans. Yes, the PhD (Law) degree from Amity University Maharashtra (a UGC-recognised private university) is valid for academic positions. However, for appointment as Assistant Professor in law colleges, candidates must also fulfil the UGC requirement of clearing UGC-NET in Law (or SET/SLET), in addition to holding a PhD. The PhD degree alone does not exempt candidates from the NET requirement for teaching positions as per current UGC norms.
