Columbia University - A Good Choice

I applied to UCLA and I was rejected – I think my profile and grades were not competitive enough. I got accepted into UT Austin – I chose to not go here because the duration of the programme here is only 1 year, which felt too stressful for me. I did not apply to any other university for MSBA as this degree heavily relies on brand value and going to a tier-2 university might not have been a good choice for me. There are maybe 30 universities which have good coursework and opportunities for internships. I chose this university for the structure of the semesters and the wide range of courses offered by the business school. The location is also perfect to experience the American life. I had conversations with a lot of current students to understand the day-to-day of the university and see if I have a cultural fit. This will also help in crafting your Statement of Purpose which is the most important part of the application 2022 intake. GRE and TOEFL In aug 2021. Followed by getting references and SOP to submit the application by October. The results were out in late feb to early march. You are required to pay a deposit of around $4000 to secure your seat and start the visa process. I applied to 7 colleges—Stanford, Columbia University, Dartmouth, Cornell University, Purdue, University of Southern California, Georgia Tech I got admitted into Columbia University, Cornell University, Purdue, and the University of Southern California I got rejected from Stanford and Georgia Tech Waitlisted - Dartmouth I think I got rejected from these universities because maybe I did not meet their program requirements in terms of experience or undergraduate program. I did my undergraduate studies in Computer Science Engineering and wanted to shift to Industrial Engineering. Another reason is that the other people who applied showed better alignment with those universities in terms of what they offered and their future goals. I chose this college, as it has an incredible reputation across the globe. It was located in New York City hence allowing me to stay in this incredible city It would give me access and the opportunity to be around people and professors so much better than myself, thereby pushing me to learn and grow more I had to submit my GRE scores, My TOEFL score, 3 recommendation letters, one Statement of Purpose, One Diversity Essay. They do Not have a specific score that they mention; however, a 320 GRE score and a 100 TOEFL score should Suffice. They do accept IELTS also, apart from your TOEFL. In addition, they asked for my undergraduate transcripts. My admission process was very straightforward and smooth; I did not face any challenges or anything other than the standard process. I applied to the program in February 2023 and got accepted in April 2023. It was my dream college and I accepted it immediately. I had already had my Purdue and USC admits, and I had registered for Purdue but I cancelled my admit there and accepted the Columbia admit immediately as it came. Some colleges had a high GRE and TOEFL cutoff which I might not have cleared. I chose Columbia because of its reputation, quality of education and courses they offer in my program. The admission process required students to submit a Statement of Purpose, a TOEFL score and attempt a video interview. They did not ask for the GRE score, only the TOEFL score with a cutoff of 100 marks. The admission process was smooth; it required us to pay $4000 to secure our admission seats within two weeks of the acceptance letter. The college had lots of information given on their website, which made things easier to understand. The administration was very prompt in answering all the queries during the process. I applied for Fall intake and aimed for an early decision. I gave my GRE and TOEFL exams in July and August 2023. I knew that I wanted to pursue my higher education in the United States because of the ample opportunities and it being at the forefront of emerging technologies. The fact that the country has a well-built pipeline for success for international students was an additional bonus. I wanted to get into a top 20 programme, as this would give me a great peer group and better opportunities while still being realistically possible with my profile. The programmes I chose were either electrical engineering programmes with a focus on ML or straight-up CS programmes. I went about choosing programmes that would allow me to gain some research experience. Location and career weren't among my concerns; I correctly believed that if I performed well enough at my school, I would not have issues with those. University itself has been a great experience. Most of the courses were interesting and of good quality. There is ample scope to conduct research and interact with professors. Columbia offers a tonne of extracurricular activities, and the University is in New York, so there is no shortage of things to do. All these things contribute to an incredible student life. New York is absolutely the best city; the transport is easy because of the subway; you have to keep your guard up but it's pretty safe. I always wanted to live in NY. Attending Columbia is like a dream come true; it holds up to its ivy rank, great campus, inspiring professors, amazing events, and you get to learn a lot here . The MS in Tech Management course really offers you a wide range of learning experiences; you can pick top electives related to design, tech, and marketing and learn about the innovative sides of this field. Overall, for all career opportunities, you can go for BA or DS roles after this masters or PM if you have experience, but in the US there is no placement system so you really have to do the word to have any opportunity....Read More
