What Students Say

- Penn State is ranked 20th among US public universities and 42nd overall in the nation. It is also ranked in the top 6% globally among about 1,900 ranked institutions. Besides, the ranking factor there are eminent mathematicians to whom I follow and are my inspiration. It is like a dream come true to learn various areas from the authors of the book itself. My research interests are in Number theory and related topics. And, in Penn State Department of Mathematics there is strong group of number theorists, along with researches in partition theory, combinatorics. Apart from this weekly seminar which brings our attention to variuos great ongoing researches in different parts. Henceforth it fits well and I choose it.
- Everything, The old main is spectaculous, Patte library to Hub robeson center, Department office and the favourite Berkey creamery has got it all too sweet.
Dislikes
- Sometimes, I feel the course is too fast and rigorous. I need more time to understand and finds it difficult to keep up with speed. To conclude, the rigidity and difficulity of the course structure is the key thing which I dislike. There is no other thing which I dislike about my University. The aenvironment, supply of resources, office supplies everything you need is provided.
I am living it and loving it. It is a blend of all exciting and stressful at the same time.
Course Curriculum
It's well planned to start a research career. For the start year there is a course work which prepares you for qualifying exam and other basic concepts to be utilised before one starts research.
Faculty
Faculties are understanding and cooperative enough so far I have interacted with. They have separate office hours or appointement times to discuss the doubts or any concept you find it difficult to go with.
Campus Life
It's a happening campus, everyday there are some activities going around the Hub centre as there are numerous students and different cultures, a large variety of events , games, career fairs, new students fair, social, sports can interest one. The football game is one thing that makes people go crazy in Beaver stadium. Everything is overwhelming.
Placement
I have no information about placements, but for the research its unexpectedably great. The faculties appointed have their education from prestigious universities and well prominent in thier reseasrch areas.
Accommodation
There are in campus dorms, which has limited capacity. If you want to live there you need to fill out the form pretty early. Else no issues there are plenty of options beacuse its a collge town the people living over here are mostly students so its a safe place as well and too many of renting options.
Exams
For the PhD program in Mathematics at Penn State, only lanugage proficiency test is required. So, I took TOEFL ibt and scored 95 out of 120. Minimum requirement is 72.. Yes, I have arranged three letters of references, and in the application portal there were questions that are bascially a part of one's letter of motivation or sop. For instance: I filled out my research statement, description of what motivated me. And, a paragraph on why would I be admitted or would be valuable addition to this university and program.
Fees
I have no idea about the tuition fee, I recieved the tuition waiver. Mostly, students who apply for PhD and got selected in TA category recieve tuition waiver.
Scholarship
No. There is no specific scholarship which I recieved but as part of PhD programme I am selected in TA category which means that I am a teaching assistant in the University so I have a work commitment of 20 hours a week in University which includes teaching mathematics courses to undergraduate students and grading assignments, others. THis provides me the salary. Apart from this an additional amount is being provided for every new student one time as a settling fee.
