What Students Say
Likes
- USC is one of prestigious universities. I prioritised ranking of USC all other admits that I had. Tge large alumni network of USC can be quite useful during your job hunt. USC has got some great professors and faculties in the field of research. Los Angeles has nice weather and you can easily accumulate.
- Great Location and very pleasant weather , large and helpful Alumni Network, Prestige of teh school and community bonding, inclusive Campus Activities, Basic Amenities, Quite and soothing Libraries, Security on the campus
Dislikes
- Tuition cost, living expenses, poor student to faculty ratio, lake of job opportunities for international students, contrasting course curriculum, large intake of CS students when compared to limited resources, decline in quality of research
USC is great but costly. The campus and intake is large; hence there is good competition for the oncampus jobs. Weather is good, but living in LA is costly. Students find it very difficult to make personal bondings with the faculties. Research opportunities are vast. Overall, USC stands out in few departments like Cinematic arts, Civil Engineering, Health Science.
Course Curriculum
USC has in-depth and comparatively tough curriculum. MSCS students can take upto 8 courses/ 32 credits. Most of the courses require constant efforts to excel. There are a few chill courses as well. Students need to find out the prefect balance in order to sail smoothly.
Faculty
Student Faculty ratio in Computer Science is bad. Some of the courses have 500+ students under 1 professor per semester. You might not get enough chances to have personal conversations with the faculty. Prof. Marco Papa, teaches Web Technologies at USC and I had a great experience studying under him.
Campus Life
USC is a large institution and very diverse. It's very happening and consists of various religious, cultural, inclusive clubs and organizations. Plenty of options for recreational sports and extra curricular activities. The campus has over 19 libraries and has all the necessary amenities.
Placement
Most of the students are able to find jobs in MNCs and startups. USC's alumni network is a great help to network and find opportunities. There are career fairs every semester, which accommodates local Los Angeles companies and employers. Median salary is dependent on the field of study and location; but approx guess is 80,000$/ year
Accommodation
Most of the USC students live off campus. There are some rental appartments available close to the campus. I lived in a 2B2B apt, shared by 4 people. It had basic amenities like gas, trash, water, wifi covered. Usual rent around USC is 750$ for a shared room/ 1200$ for a private room.
Exams
My scores: GRE 154 Verbal 168 Quant 4 Writing; IELTS 8.0; Class minimum score: GRE waived off; IELTS 6.5;. I submitted 2 academic LORs, 1 Industrial LOR and a SOP. LORs included my classes, projects, extra curriculum, hackathon, achievements. My SOP had all the details about me, my education, experience and aspirations. I tried to show why I am interested in the course and how I can help USC expand their legacy if given a chance.
