What Students Say
Likes
- It offers free transport shuttle for students, although the transport shuttle takes time to get to our pick up location whenever we used, but from the Universities I have applied to, this was the only one that offered this particular service.
- There are a lot of clubs for international students to join, and make this university a home, celebrating all cultures and traditions. I have very few moments where I felt I was far from home.
- My university also offers student counseling for career after masters, like resume and cover letter preparation, interview street handling - tips and tricks, it is the SPS Career Connections Center, I have attended some three workshops, which helped me gain a lot of insights of preparation to make before applying for jobs and internships.
Dislikes
- Cold Winters: The winters here are really harsh, especially if you’re not used to the cold. It can be a challenge to get through, especially during the first year.
- Slow Transport Service: The university transport service can be frustrating because it takes forever to book a ride when you need one. It’s not very reliable if you’re in a hurry.
- Limited On-Campus Jobs: There aren’t enough on-campus part-time job opportunities for grad students, which is disappointing, especially for those who want to work while studying.
Course Curriculum
- The course curriculum was a bit difficult for me as I am from Electrical Background and have less knowledge on coding part, but I was able to keep up with the help of my professors and their teaching assistants who are very kind and always provided me with right materials to understand the topic at hand so that I could complete the given assignments on time.
- It is a mix of both practical and theoretical but leans towards practical assignments.
Admission Experience
- I have applied to 5 universities in total,I received confirmed admissions from 4 of these universities
- One being Clark University
- The others are Eastern Illinois University-IL, Stevens Institute of Technology-NJ, Missouri Institute of Science and Technology- MI and University of North Texas- TX. got admitted in all 4 of them..
- There was one university which I got rejected from i.e.
- University of North Texas.
- In my opinion I got rejected from UNT because my background in btech was from Electrical and not Computer Science, that was the reason mentioned for my rejection in UNT.
- I selected Clark University because the tuition fees and living expenses fits well with my budget, which was a critical factor for me. Also, Massachusetts, especially the Boston area is known for its youthful energy and vibrant community due to the many internationally recognized universities in this region.
- I felt this environment would give me great exposure, both academically and culturally, and provide opportunities to connect with a different cultural group of people.
- I applied for Fall-2023 intake based on the job market situation at that time, I suggest anyone to apply according to their convenience, I chose for Fall intake as I can graduate in summer where general hiring still goes on, unlike December where there will be a hiring freeze on most companies due to budget constraints.
- It almost took 3 months for my application process. I got a reply from the college after 3 months on my acceptance as I applied very early, but now the process is a lot quicker when I enquired with the new intakes for this semester.
Class Schedule
- Typically I has only one class per day and the usual timings are 6.30pm to 9.30pm EST. There were around 30-60 students in a course depending upon which day and course. In the courses I have taken there were around 80% Indian students enrolled.
Faculty
- I am not sure the numbers but definitely there were considerably less faculty as I could see one professor taking multiple classes for the same course on different days due to students requesting to enroll in that particular course.
- But so far there were no problems that the students faced as the management has planned everything pitch perfect.
- The methods are very efficient as the assignments that the students are tasked with are very much relatable to the real world experiences and qre definitely worth building a resume upon for job applications.
Campus Life
- There is only one huge campus located at 900 main street Worcester
- There are some different buildings nearby like Corner House, Graduate Student Office, Accounts Department etc, Health Services, Dolan Athletic Field for sports, Kneller Athletic center which has a Gym and indoor Basketball, Squash courts.
- There are different clubs for different cultural events and activities, one of these clubs which I joined was the South Asian Student Association, which conducts all of our Indian cultural fests and activities.
Part Time Jobs
- Students in these positions are permitted to work up to 20 hours per week during academic sessions and up to 40 hours per week during semester breaks.
- Beyond these roles, My University provides a variety of on-campus employment opportunities across different departments and facilities. These positions include library assistants, administrative support, and roles within campus dining services.
- The university’s on-campus student employment department enables students to gain professional experience while earning an income.
- The minimum wage for on-campus jobs is $15 per hour, with some positions offering higher rates depending on the job’s responsibilities and required skills.
- It’s also important to note that on-campus employment is highly competitive, with many students trying for a limited number of positions.
- International students face additional challenges due to visa regulations and the necessity of obtaining work authorization.
- To enhance the likelihood of securing on-campus employment, students are advised to begin their job search early, utilize resources such as Clark’s Career Connections Center, and prepare strong application materials.
- Additionally, international students should be aware of the specific employment restrictions associated with their visa status.
- On an hourly basis, international students earn around 15$ per hour working 20 hours per week on- campus.
- Most of the jobs are Graduate Assistant, Teaching Assistant, Cafeteria etc.
- It is quite competitive for international students to get On-campus jobs as they are very limited and number of students are a lot.
- The only platform to apply for on-campus jobs is Handshake, we can sign in using our university credentials.
Placement
- With an MSCS degree from my University, I feel l am well equipped to pursue a variety of full-time positions in Boston’s leading tech sector.
- Leveraging the resources available through my university’s Career Connections Center and by maintaining an active presence on the LinkedIn community feels that will further improve my employment opportunities.
- So far I have just started applying for full time jobs so I do not have much experience in this to share a review, just wanted to post what I have felt this far.
Accommodation
- I opted for Off- Campus accommodation, as On campus is a bit on the pricey side, I found my accommodation by joining the University’s off-campus WhatsApp group, the link is mentioned in the university website.
- Monthly rent for a private room varies from 600-1000$ excluding utilities, mine was a shared 2 bed 1 bath apartment between four people excluding utilities. My apartment is just 2 minutes walk from the university.
Exams
- As of now there is no requirement of any exam, just a bachelor’s degree works fine, but having written exams like GRE, IELTS, Duolingo helps in getting better scholarships is what I heard, in my case it was different as GRE mandatory then but not now.
- Documents like SOP, 3 different LOR from your bachelors professor or department head are required to complete the admission application.
- There is no interview for the application.
Fees
- So, the fee structure depends on the program that you’re going into, As I am pursuing Masters in Computer Science, we’ve have to complete 10 courses in the span of 4 semester i.e., 2 years, so the tuition fees per course is 4000$ USD, there will be varying charges per semester like Graduate Fees, Technology Fees., etc but all of these might be negligible based on the percentage of scholarships you receive at the time of Admission, the fees is charged semester wise.
- Monthly estimate depends on the lifestyle you maintain, basic rent might vary from 300$ in a sharing to 1000$ in a private room, and so goes on the groceries and utility bill, the less sharing the more expensive, my monthly estimate goes upto 550$ including Rent, Mobile, Wifi, Electricity and around 300$ for groceries and traveling My commute is free as the public bus transport is free in Worcester, MA, so I need pay for traveling only if I go out of Worcester City.
Scholarship
- Yes, there is a scholarship based on your merit provided by the University.
- My consultancy which helped me in my admission process also helped me in filling the scholarship application, which grabbed me 10% scholarship on my tuition fee based on my profile and merits.
- The scholarships vary from 10%- 30% most of my batchmates received around 20-30%, so this applies only to the tuition fees, like I should pay 4000$ per course in a semester, after my scholarship I pay only 3555$ per course in a semester.
