Colleges Where I Was Accepted

Reason for choosing my college

  • I chose Stony Brook University for its strong data science program, affordability and research opportunities for career growth.
  • The main pros are: Strong academic reputation Affordable tuition Research opportunities Proximity to NYC
  • The cons are: Limited Campus Life and Social Life Weather Conditions Limited Public Transportation Competitive environment

Colleges Where I Was Rejected

Reason for Rejection

  • I wasn’t accepted to UMN Twin Cities and UCI likely due to high competition in their data science programs, where admissions are based on a combination of academic performance, test scores and relevant experience. Factors like a lower acceptance rate, a highly competitive applicant pool or gaps in my profile compared to their expectations may have played a role.

Tips to enhance your application

  • Include relevant work experience, relevant certificates and relevant courses that you might have done. Include any research work or any papers that you might have published, as it leaves a strong impression on the admissions teams.

Admission Experience

  • The reason I chose the USA was for it’s globally recognised education systems and strong job market in the tech industry. It is ranked as the #1 public university in New York and #58 of the best colleges in the USA.
  • Computer science and data science are two of the best programs here. Proximity to NYC for better job opportunities. Great career opportunities and networking opportunities through events. Overall experience has been good throughout my course.

Class Schedule

8

  • 3 classes every week; depends on course to course but shouldn’t be more than 4 per week. 5-6:30, 11-12:30, 11-1:30 (again, depends on the course but each class is mostly 1:30 hours) 80 is the average strength of the class in data science.
  • 75% of the students are from an Indian background; 7-8 hours daily are required for self-study.

Faculty

8

  • There is 1 faculty for each course that has been allocated. Silvia Sharna teaches AMS 583 statistical computing and she also explains the basics of the R language for statistical modelling. On top of that, the way she approaches problems and finds an easy way to explain them is what makes her stand out from others. Only some do.

Campus Life

10

  • My college has three main campuses: SBU main campus, Southampton campus and Manhattan campus.
  • All facilities are available, including the gym, football, basketball, badminton, swimming, squash, volleyball, and pickleball. Extracurriculars in terms of contributing to career growth are widely available on campus through a lot of events.

Part Time Jobs

  • They can work in different departments according to their interests: Students usually get paid around $18/hr but it can depend on state to state. It is pretty competitive but is achievable through some amount of networking and connections. The usual process to apply is to meet with them or mail them directly.
  • For CS roles, it is usually easier to get it and most of them get it as it can also be taken as a credit but is unpaid. For paid TA, it is very competitive. RA roles are also achievable through some amount of networking.
  • Maximum hours of on-campus work allowed is 20 hours per week but for summer it can be extended to 40, including internships.

Placement

9

  • 80–90% of the batch secures a job within 6 months due to the connections and networking that stonybrook allows them to. It depends on course to course but for CS and DS it is around $85000. Students find jobs through networking and job platforms like LinkedIn and Handshake, Glassdoor & indeed is also used for reaching out to recruiters. Highest can be around $250000; lowest can be around $50000.

Accommodation

Off Campus
9

  • Stony Brook University provides on-campus housing through their college portal, which is easy to use and easy to access. The accommodation process is very competitive, as huge numbers of students try to compete in the applicant pool. One recommendation would be to go for rooms that are 3 BHK or 2 BHK, as they are the cheapest here.
