Course Curriculum

10

  • The curriculum is well structured and regularly updated to reflect current developments in the field. Courses combine theoretical learning with practical research and data analysis. Students also get opportunities to work on research projects or collaborate with faculty on ongoing studies. Internships for industry experience are common.
  • Classes are usually scheduled from 8 am to 5 pm; there could be specialized classes or labs during after-hours. For graduate programs, there could be 1-3 classes a day, and the number of students can range from 10 to 150, depends of nature of the class.

Admission Experience

  • I chose Virginia Tech because of its strong reputation in research, experienced faculty, and the opportunities to work on applied projects. The admission process was straightforward and well-organized. Overall, my experience has been very positive, with a good balance of academic rigor, research exposure, and student support.
  • Not sure of the threshold scores now, or if GRE is required yet. My scores were GRE: 316, TOEFL: 101

Faculty

10

  • The faculty at Virginia Tech are highly knowledgeable and actively involved in research and industry collaborations. They are generally approachable and supportive of student research and career development. The faculty-to-student ratio allows for meaningful academic interaction and mentorship. My PhD supervisor, Dr. Maria Balota, impacted my career a lot.

Campus Life

10

  • Campus life at Virginia Tech is vibrant with numerous student clubs, academic organizations, and cultural events throughout the year. The campus has excellent research labs, libraries, and recreational facilities.
  • Students also have access to sports complexes, study spaces, and collaborative work environments.

Part Time Jobs

  • Students can work up to 20 hours per week during the semester. On-campus jobs such as Teaching Assistant, Research Assistant, or departmental roles are common, while some students also work in campus facilities (such as library, dining, etc)..
  • Hourly wages typically range between $12–$20 depending on the position. Off campus employement is illegal for international students and should be avoided.

Placement

10

  • Many students secure employment within a few months after graduation, especially in fields related to technology, research, and data analysis. Job searches typically happen through internships, networking, faculty connections, and online job platforms like LinkedIn or company career portals.

Accommodation

Off Campus
10

  • Most students find accommodation through online housing groups, university housing portals, or local rental listings. Monthly rent in Blacksburg typically ranges from $500–$900 depending on whether the housing is shared or private. Many apartments also include utilities, internet, and basic amenities.

Exams

  • Admission typically requires proof of English proficiency, such as IELTS or TOEFL, and some programs may require GRE scores. My scores: GRE 320 and IELTS 7.5.
  • Applicants are also evaluated based on academic transcripts, research experience, and supporting documents such as LOR, SoP, etc. More than these documents and scores, research experience (best if published a paper) is important if going for a research-oriented program.

Fees

  • Not sure, I had an assistantship, so my tuition was covered. Generally, it would be around $10000 - 14000 per semester, depending on the number of courses registered for.
