Dr. P. Magudeaswaran is the Head of the Department of Civil Engineering at Adithya Institute of Technology, Coimbatore. He did his B.E. degree from the Government College of Technology, Coimbatore; his M.E. in Structural Engineering from Kumaraguru College of Technology, Coimbatore; and his PhD in Structural Engineering from Anna University. Previously, he worked as HOD In-Charge at CMSCET. Moreover, he has published over 60 papers in international and national journals.

What do you think should be the College’s top priority over the next 10 years?

I believe that the top priority of our college over the next 10 years should be to provide students with an updated technical education in the field of engineering. The rapidly evolving nature of the industry demands that we stay ahead of the curve and equip our students with the latest knowledge and skills. This requires continuously updating our curriculum to align with emerging technologies, industry trends, and sustainable practises. It is crucial to foster a culture of innovation, research, and practical learning, empowering students to tackle real-world challenges. By prioritising updated technical education, we ensure that our students are well-prepared to excel in their careers and contribute meaningfully to society.

How do you try to bring in a practical approach to subjects?

I strive to provide students with industry-oriented meets, webinars, and workshops. These platforms enable students to interact with industry experts, gain insights into real-world applications of theoretical concepts, and understand the latest trends and advancements in the field. I also organize site visits to construction projects, where students can witness the practical implementation of engineering principles. Additionally, I always encourage students to participate in hands-on projects, case studies, and simulations to develop practical problem-solving skills. By incorporating these practical elements, our department bridge the gap between theory and practice, preparing our students to be competent and industry-ready civil engineers.

How does your college prepare students for placements?

We provide industry-oriented meets, webinars, and workshops to familiarize students with the requirements and expectations of the industry. We also encourage students to participate in the placement drives of various companies, where they can showcase their skills and knowledge. Additionally, we conduct mock interviews, resume-building sessions, and aptitude training to enhance their interview readiness. Our faculty and placement cell provides guidance and support throughout the placement process, helping students develop a competitive edge and secure promising career opportunities in the engineering field. 

What was your vision when you came to the college?

I wanted to create an environment where students could engage in hands-on learning experiences, conduct experiments, and apply theoretical concepts to real-world scenarios. By setting up well-equipped laboratories, I aimed to provide students with the opportunity to develop practical skills, problem-solving abilities, and a deeper understanding of civil engineering principles. Additionally, I focused on cultivating an entrepreneurial mindset by encouraging innovation, creativity, and critical thinking, empowering students to identify opportunities, take risks, and contribute to the growth and development of the field. 

How does the college enhance the skills of the faculty and prepare them according to the industry standards?

Faculty members are actively encouraged to publish research papers in reputed journals, thereby fostering a culture of scholarly inquiry and keeping them updated with the latest advancements in their respective fields. The college also organizes Faculty Development Programs (FDPs) to provide faculty members with opportunities for professional development and skill enhancement. These programs cover a wide range of topics, including teaching methodologies, emerging technologies, and industry trends.

Any valuable advice would you like to give the students for them to have a prosperous career ahead?

One valuable piece of advice I would like to give to students for a prosperous career ahead is to embrace continuous learning by actively seeking out new ideas and technologies. In today's rapidly changing world, staying updated with the latest advancements in your field is essential. I encourage students to listen attentively to their faculty members. They possess a wealth of knowledge and experience that can significantly contribute to their academic and professional growth. By being receptive to guidance and insights from their mentors, students can gain valuable insights, expand their horizons, and pave the way for a successful and fulfilling career.
