Dr. L. Babitha is the Head of the Department of Information Technology at the United Institute of Technology. With a robust academic foundation, she holds a Master of Engineering in Computer Science and Engineering from the Government College of Engineering and a Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Science and Engineering from Dr. Sivanthi Aditanar College of Engineering, Tiruchendur.

With 18 years of teaching experience in engineering colleges, Dr. Babitha has significantly contributed to the academic community. She has been honoured as the Women IKON of United Educational Institution on International Women’s Day in 2023, a testament to her dedication and impact. Babitha’s areas of specialisation include Database Management Systems, Data Science and Machine Learning, Data Structures, Operating Systems, and Compiler Design. She has published two journal articles and actively participates in seminars, faculty development programs, and workshops, having attended 25 such events to date.

You have held key positions at education institutes throughout your professional career. What are the key factors that keep you connected with the education sector?

Giving assistance and direction to others can be a powerful source of motivation. My work and my efforts positively affect the futures of the students. This makes me feel good about my capabilities and contribution to the progress they are making in their careers. I also find it motivating to assist them in reaching their goals.


Being the HOD of IT, what is your philosophy of leadership? How would you describe your leadership style?

The department needs, in my opinion, a compelling vision that is consistent with its objectives and mission. All pertinent stakeholders must be made aware of this goal in an effective manner to guarantee collaboration and alignment. My leadership style is in tune with these viewpoints. I try to be communicative and open with all. Additionally, I try to include everyone in the decision-making process and make it a point to take their feedback as well.


The education systems in India and other foreign countries are structured very differently. In your experience, what can an inbound student gain from studying here in your institute, university, or school?

Students coming to India for education stand to gain a lot besides a world-class education. India is renowned for its wide variety of languages, cultures, and traditions. The diverse range of cultural experiences that students encounter during their time here at school broadens their perspective on the world and its various cultures. They become well-adjusted individuals who are able to survive in any industry and work situation.

Through co-ops, internships, and community service initiatives, we wish for our students to obtain real-world experience thanks to our dedication to experiential learning.


What do you think should be the university’s top priority over the next 10 years?

In a world that is changing quickly, UIT should work harder to strengthen its sustainability, influence, and relevance over the next ten years. The curriculum needs to be updated and changed frequently to take into account new developments in emerging fields, industry demands, and technological advancements.


Any suggestions you would like to give to the current youth and the aspiring students?

Maintain your curiosity and receptivity to new knowledge. To remain up-to-date and flexible in the always-shifting environment, one must commit to lifelong learning. Choose your immediate and long-term objectives and work systematically towards them. Staying focused and motivated is made easier when one has a clear direction.
