GATE Marking Pattern
GATE Marking Pattern
GATE exam is a 3 hours long paper and divided into sections such as General Aptitude, Engineering Mathematics (depending on the paper selected), and Verbal Ability. The paper is out of 100 marks in total with 65 questions. Candidates can expect two types of questions; Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) and Numerical Answer Type (NAT).
- Each question is of one or two marks. General Aptitude is compulsory for all papers.
- Questions from the General Aptitude section will be of 15 marks. This will consist of 5 one mark and 5 two marks questions.
- For papers in which Engineering Mathematics is not compulsory, questions from the subject are given 80% weightage (80 marks).
- Questions from that particular selected subject will be given 70% weightage (70 marks) if Engineering Mathematics is compulsory.
- Negative marking is applicable only for MCQ type questions. For each incorrect answer chosen, one third of the marks will be deducted.
- Subjects which receive a large number of applicants are conducted in multiple sessions. These papers undergo the process of normalization to ensure that each candidate is judged equally.
Disciplines of GATE
As the level of the GATE exam is postgraduate, there are many sub fields in which students can sit. 25 subjects in which GATE is conducted are:
| Aerospace Engineering (AE) | Agricultural Engineering (AG) | Biotechnology (BT) | Civil Engineering (CE) |
| Chemical Engineering (CH) | Computer Science and Information Technology (CS) | Electronics and Communication (EC) | Electrical Engineering (EE) |
| Instrumentation Engineering (IN) | Mechanical Engineering (ME) | Metallurgical Engineering (MT) | Mining Engineering (MN) |
| Petroleum Engineering (PE) | Production and Industrial Engineering (PI) | Textile Engineering and Fiber Science (TF) | Engineering Sciences (XE) |
GATE Score Normalization
Although there are 25 papers in which a candidate can take the exam, few subjects receive much more applications compared to others. Since it is not possible to accommodate all candidates taking the test on these subjects, the exam is conducted in more than one session. These papers are:
- Electronics and Communication Engineering
- Computer Science and Information Technology
- Mechanical Engineering
- Electrical Engineering
- Civil Engineering
As multiple sessions mean multiple papers, it is reasonable to conclude that the level of difficulty may also differ. A process of normalization is therefore employed to ensure equity. We have explained in detail how Score Calculation in GATE works to help you understand the method better.
