Admission to the MTech program at IIT Madras for 2025-26 is conducted online and is based on qualification through GATE.

Eligibility
Applicants must satisfy at least one of the following:
- GATE Qualified Candidates: Valid GATE (2023, 2024, or 2025) score, with a bachelor’s in Engineering/Technology/Architecture (AICTE/government-approved) or master’s in a relevant Science discipline (UGC/Government-approved).
- IIT BTech Graduates: Candidates with a BTech from IIT and CGPA ≥8.0/10 can apply without a GATE score.
- Sponsored Candidates: Employed and sponsored professionals (with two years’ experience and full pay for 24 months) holding BE/BTech with at least 60% or equivalent.
- Associate Membership Holders: Recognized memberships (AMIE, etc.) are also considered for the parent department.
Application Procedure
- GATE Registration: If applicable, register and qualify for GATE. Ensure you have a valid score.
- COAP Registration: All GATE qualifiers must register on the COAP (Common Offer Acceptance Portal). This is compulsory to participate in offers and allotment rounds.
- IIT Madras Online Application:
- Visit mtechadm.iitm.ac.in and click on the MTech admissions link.
- Complete the registration and application form, including details on academic background, exam scores, and personal information.
- Upload required documents (see below).
- Pay the application fee online (₹600 for General/OBC/EWS, ₹300 for SC/ST/PwD/Female).
- Submit before the last date (April 25, 2025).

Seat Allotment & Admission Offers
- Candidates are shortlisted and ranked department-wise based on their GATE score or CGPA (IIT graduates).
- Shortlisted candidates receive offer rounds via the COAP portal.
- Accept or reject the admission offer within the timeline on COAP.
- Confirm the seat by paying the admission fee as instructed by IIT Madras for the particular round.
Program Structure & Seats
- Total intake (2025): over 700 seats.
- New specializations, such as “Electric Vehicles,” have recently been added.
Fees Structure (2025-26)
The M.Tech. fees at IIT Madras consist of one-time fees totaling Rs. 20,000, which include an admission fee of Rs. 3,000, student welfare fund of Rs. 1,500, career pathway facility charges of Rs. 9,500, and alumni services fee of Rs. 6,000. Semester fees, payable every semester, amount to Rs. 40,402. Additionally, a refundable caution deposit of Rs. 5,000 is required. For General/OBC/EWS categories, the total institute fees payable is Rs. 65,402, while it is Rs. 40,402 for SC/ST/PwD categories, and Rs. 1,15,402 for sponsored students. Foreign Nationals have to pay a higher total of Rs. 5,68,000.

IIT Madras M.Tech Admission through GATE 2024: Eligibility Criteria
Students must fulfill the required eligibility criteria to apply for M.Tech admissions at IIT Madras. Otherwise, their application will be rejected straightaway. The minimum eligibility criteria for GATE qualified students are as follows:

Candidates who fulfill the eligibility criteria mentioned above can apply for M. Tech admissions at IIT Madras using the following steps:
- Visit the official website of IIT Madras M. Tech admissions.
- Click on the link stating “Apply Online” after the website opens. (If you are applying for multiple courses you will have to submit a separate application for each course.)
- Fill in all the required details in the application form carefully and provide your valid Mobile number and Email-Id to complete the registration. You will then receive your login credentials on the mobile number or email id provided during registration.
- Use the credentials to log in to the portal and complete the online application procedure. (Remember, the details cannot be edited once the application is submitted. So, verify each detail carefully before submitting the application form.)
- After filling in all the details asked in the application form, scan and upload the required documents.
- Next, pay the online application fees (INR 200 for SC/ ST/ PWD Candidates and INR 400 for others) and take a printout of the application form for future use.

IIT Madras Admission Process
IIT Madras M.Tech Admission through GATE 2024: Admission Process
IIT Madras will announce the cut-off marks after the declaration of GATE 2024 results. Candidates will be shortlisted based on their merit scores and the choices selected by them in the application form. Candidates will have to attend subsequent rounds of the M.Tech admission process. For some courses, students will also need to appear for the Suitability Test and Interview. In this case, students will be offered admissions based on their performance in suitability tests, GATE scores, and interviews.
- Acceptance of offer and Fee Payment: Once the candidates are selected, they will receive an admission offer letter from IIT Madras. Students will have to accept the offer and pay the program fees. After accepting the admission offer, the student will not be able to participate in the subsequent admission rounds or change the choice.
- Report for Admission: Candidates who accept the offer letter will then have to submit their certificate of qualifying degree examination and report at the institute within the given dates. Candidates will also have to submit a medical fitness certificate from the Registered Medical Practitioner.
- Course Fee Payment: Students who accept the admission offer will have to pay the course fee through the official website of IIT Madras M. Tech admissions. Further, students who wish to avail hostel facility will have to pay additional fees.
For PwD Candidates:
- For PwD candidates with any category of disability (viz., blindness or low vision, hearing impairment, locomotor disability, or cerebral palsy), the benefit will be given to only those who have at least 40% permanent physical impairment in relation to a body part/ system/ extremity/ whole body, etc.
- These candidates must upload the certificate of disability from the authorized medical board attached to one of the following: Vocational Rehabilitation Centre (VRC) for Physically Handicapped persons /Special Employment Exchange for Physically Handicapped/ Government Hospital (District and State level).

Ans. Yes, GATE scores are mandatory while applying for M. Tech courses at IIT Madras. However, if you are a graduate from any IIT with a CGPA of 8.0 or above, you may apply without GATE scores as well.
Ques. What is HTTA? What is N-HTTA?
Ans. Financial assistance in the form of Half-Time Teaching Assistantship (HTTA) at the rate of INR 12400 per month (tenable for a maximum period of 24 months) is available for Indian nationals taking admission in M. Tech. programs. Students taking admission through HTTA category are required to assist the department for 8 hours of work per week related to academic activities of the department such as laboratory demonstration, tutorials, assessment of assignments, test papers, seminars, research projects, etc.
Some seats are also available without HTTA (N-HTTA, i.e., without any financial assistance) in some M. Tech. Programs. There is a provision for the candidates (Indian Nationals) who have joined M. Tech. Streams under N- HTTA category to convert to HTTA at the end of the first semester depending on the vacancies in HTTA category and on the basis of their performance in the first semester examinations.
Ques. Is there any limit on the number of programs one can apply to?
Ans. Candidates can apply for a maximum of 8 programs as per the application form.
Ques. What are the steps to be taken/ documents required when I accept an offer of admission?
Ans. Candidates will have to pay the institute’s fee online. Please note that you may have to additionally bear the charges pertaining to the use of payment portal. The charges may vary depending on the use of Net banking or Credit/ Debit cards. After paying the fee candidates should:
- Download the offer documents
- Sign the letter of acceptance and send it along with original GATE Score Card and attested copy of Category Certificate (SC/ ST/ OBC-NCL) within the stipulated date to the address below. Use only speed post for sending these documents.
