Reviewed on Mar 17, 2026(Enrolled 2022)What Students Say
Likes
- Being a public university, there are lots of multicultural activities and event ongoing all year round.
- The life on campus is vivid and filled with nature.
- You will always see something happen - may not be your department may not be something you know of, but students are constantly engaged with the community.
Dislikes
- Just like any other university, Trent University isn’t good for all courses (well if one university had everything, we all would only want to go there), there has to be some drawbacks.
- Trent is majorly known for its Environmental Science, Forensic Science, Chemical Sciences, and Nursing programs, placements and internship opportunities are highly inclined towards these, and for students in other programs its relatively difficult to find so, being in a smaller city.
Course Curriculum
8
- The course syllabus was updated at a slower pace - from when I started to when I started working at the university as a student assistant, I saw very few syllabus updates in a few courses. But overall syllabus is relevant and is an understanding between employer requirements (local to the region) and faculty.
- Before, industrial exposure was limited, and few courses were offered almost 100%.
- Some faculties always offer some research activities, sometimes on an individual level or as an apprenticeship.
Admission Experience
- Honestly, it was the only University I applied to outside of India.
- But the program, having offered a specialization, is what was desired, as it combined two sides that are usually two different majors.
- Coming from a Cambridge Education Curriculum, admission requirements were a lot less strict; I had to get 2 C’s at my A-Level examinations, with much of my admission confirmed just by my IGCSE and AS LEVEL grades.
- Due to not having taken English at AS LEVEL, I had to give the IELTS examination, in which I had to get a 6.5 at a minimum. (My score: 7.5)
Faculty
6
- Student-faculty ratio changes depending on your program, year of study, its difficult to determine. The faculty, on average, are good, not all of them are well-versed and or approachable.
- Kudos to Jamie Mitchell (Computer Science) and Russel Turner (Economics)
Campus Life
8
- Trent University has two main campuses - Symons Campus in Peterborough, Ontario, and Durham Campus in Oshawa, Ontario
- Clubs range from majors to minors, to community level, to niches, to sports.
- The majority of the events hosted at the university have a club arranging them in order to keep track and take responsibility.
- Trent has varsity teams and is known for lacrosse, rowing, and the best, but also engages in basketball, soccer, football, rugby, and volleyball.
Part Time Jobs
- Based on the type of job, but usually between minimum wage and $2 per hour above that. Use online platforms and or in-person resume submissions. 24 hours allowed for off-campus, no limit for on-campus hours. Seeking on-campus jobs is more difficult than off-campus, as they pay better and give better exposure to students. Few students avail academic positions, but many departments set a cap on how many roles a single student can avail, even if they are the best.
Placement
6
- Less than 50% students secure employment within 6 months (at least international students, as the majority employer ask for in hand work permit)
- $55000 per annum
- Attend job fairs, use job search platforms, and use the university job board
Accommodation
Off Campus
6
- On-campus residence for first-year students (with limits) was guaranteed, so when I was a newcomer to Canada, it wasn't difficult to find accommodation with this rule. On-campus accommodation costs range between $1500 - $2000 monthly. Off-campus accommodation is cheaper, and there are platforms to find them too - FB Marketplace, Kijji, etc
Exams
- Language requirements were either IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE
- Documents additional to education qualifications - Statement of Purpose, LORs, CV
Fees
- When I started my fees for the first year were around $27000, and by the final year, with $2000 annual increments, I paid $32000 (inclusive of scholarships)
