FAQs
Ques. What is the difference between the 8-month cohort and the 2-year course-based program?
Ans. The 8-month cohort is an intensive, full-time program completed in one academic year (Fall and Winter terms). The 2-year course-based program offers flexibility with part-time options and allows students to balance work and studies. Both programs award the same MEng degree and qualify for a 3-year PGWP. The cohort is ideal for students seeking rapid completion and higher ROI, while the standard program suits working professionals.
Ques. Can I switch specializations after admission to the MEng program?
Ans. Yes, specialization changes are possible during the first term. Students can switch between Chemical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, and Energy and Environment specializations based on course selection. Contact the MEng program office at meng@ucalgary.ca to discuss your options before finalizing your course schedule.
Ques. What are the job prospects for MEng graduates in Canada's current energy market?
Ans. Despite market fluctuations, UCalgary MEng graduates maintain a 96% employment rate. Demand remains strong for chemical engineers in pharmaceuticals, food processing, and manufacturing sectors beyond oil and gas. Petroleum engineers have opportunities in renewable energy transition projects, carbon capture, and reservoir management. The paid internship significantly improves placement outcomes, with many students receiving permanent job offers from internship employers.
