Bachelor of Science Architecture at McGill University: Fees, Admissions & Career Outcomes for Indian Students (2026)

McGill University's Bachelor of Science in Architecture (B.Sc.Arch.) is a 3-year undergraduate program offered by the Peter Guo-hua Fu School of Architecture, housed within the Faculty of Engineering, in Montreal, Canada. McGill ranks #27 globally (QS 2026) and #51–100 in Architecture and Built Environment (QS 2026) — placing it among the top 4 architecture schools in Canada.

Established in 1896, the McGill School of Architecture is one of the oldest on the continent. The B.Sc.Arch. is a pre-professional degree — it is the direct pathway to McGill's Master of Architecture (Professional), a 1.5-year program required to practice as a licensed architect in Canada. The combined B.Sc.Arch. + M.Arch. route is the standard professional architecture pathway at McGill.

Admission Status (April 2026): Applications for the Fall 2027 intake open on October 1, 2026. The deadline for Indian applicants is January 15, 2027. Supporting documents are due by March 1, 2027. The Major Entrance Scholarship application deadline is January 21, 2027.

Admissions: McGill BSc Architecture Requirements for Indian Students

The B.Sc.Arch. has a single Fall intake each year. Indian students apply as international high school applicants.

Milestone Date
Application Opens (Fall 2027) October 1, 2026
Application Deadline (International) January 15, 2027
Supporting Documents Deadline March 1, 2027

Career Outcomes After McGill BSc Architecture

The B.Sc.Arch. alone does not qualify graduates to practice as licensed architects. Most graduates proceed to the M.Arch. Professional (1.5 years) at McGill or another accredited school. The combined B.Sc.Arch. + M.Arch. is the standard route to licensure in Canada.

Role Average Annual Salary (CAD) INR (Approx.)
Architectural Graduate / Intern Architect CAD 55,000–70,000 ₹37.0–47.1 Lakhs
Licensed Architect (5–7 years exp.) CAD 85,000–1,10,000 ₹57.2–74.1 Lakhs
Senior Architect / Project Architect CAD 1,00,000–1,30,000 ₹67.3–87.5 Lakhs
Urban Planner / Landscape Architect CAD 70,000–95,000 ₹47.1–64.0 Lakhs
Architect (Montreal avg.) ~CAD 95,600/year ~₹64.4 Lakhs

Graduates of the B.Sc.Arch. also pursue careers in industrial design, computer graphics, film production design, construction management and urban planning — without requiring the M.Arch.

ROI: McGill BSc Architecture for Indian Students

Cost Component CAD INR (Approx.)
Total Tuition — 4 years (Year 0 + 3 years) ~CAD 1,42,244 ~₹95.79 Lakhs
Total Living Cost (4 years) ~CAD 57,600 ~₹38.79 Lakhs
Total Investment (4 years) ~CAD 1,99,844 ~₹1.35 Crores
Starting Salary (Architectural Graduate) CAD 55,000–70,000/year ₹37–47 Lakhs/year
Break-Even Period ~3–4 years post-employment

Adding the M.Arch. Professional (1.5 years, CAD 35,000–40,000 additional tuition) increases total investment to approximately ₹1.60–1.65 Crores — but unlocks full licensure and significantly higher earning potential. Licensed architects in Montreal earn an average of **CAD 95,600/year (₹64.4 Lakhs)**.

The B.Sc.Arch. at McGill is a long-term investment. The guaranteed tuition model eliminates fee uncertainty over 4 years. Combined with Montreal's low cost of living and a clear pathway to Canadian licensure and PR via the PGWP after M.Arch., it remains one of the most structured architecture pathways in Canada for Indian students.

FAQs

Ques. Is a portfolio required to apply for the McGill BSc Architecture program from India?

Ans. No. A portfolio is not required at the B.Sc.Arch. application stage for Indian students. McGill's undergraduate architecture admissions are based on academic grades (Class 12 results) and English language proficiency. A portfolio is only required when applying to proceed from the B.Sc.Arch. to the M.Arch. Professional program — at which point students must submit a portfolio of work from their six design studios plus samples of professional and personal work.

Ques. How many years does the McGill BSc Architecture program take for Indian students?

Ans. Indian students entering directly from Class 12 are admitted into Year 0 — a foundation year where they complete 18 credits in science and liberal arts electives before entering the core architecture curriculum. This makes the total B.Sc.Arch. duration 4 years for Indian applicants (1 year foundation + 3 years architecture). Students who then proceed to the M.Arch. Professional add another 1.5 years — making the full path to licensure 5.5 years from Year 0 entry.

Ques. Can Indian students practice as architects in Canada after completing the McGill BSc Architecture?

Ans. No. The B.Sc.Arch. alone is a pre-professional degree and does not qualify graduates to practice as licensed architects in Canada. To become a licensed architect, Indian students must complete the M.Arch. Professional (1.5 years) after the B.Sc.Arch. and then complete the Intern Architect Program (IAP) and licensing exams through the provincial architectural association (e.g., OAQ in Quebec). The M.Arch. Professional at McGill requires a minimum CGPA of 3.0 in the B.Sc.Arch. and a portfolio submission.

What are the chances of getting admitted with 3 years Bachelor degree?
S

A four-year bachelor’s degree is typically required to apply for graduate admission at McGill University. However, the university also somtimes accepts applications from students who have completed a three-year bachelor’s degree on a case-by-case basis. However, meeting the minimum admission requirements does not guarantee admission to the program, as admission decisions are highly competitive and based on a holistic review of each students’s credentials.
