GCECT: Students' Opinion

AI-Generated Summary based on 26 Reviews

Government College of Engineering and Ceramic Technology admits students primarily through the WBJEE, typically requiring a rank within the top 10,000. The college offers three engineering streams: Computer Science Engineering (CSE), Information Technology (IT), and Ceramic Technology (CT). Annual fees are approximately INR 12,000 for CSE, INR 24,000 for IT, and INR 6,000 for CT. Over four years, total fees are INR 52,000 for CSE (reduced to INR 6,000 under TFW), and INR 72,000 for IT.

The college provides fee waivers for economically disadvantaged students, with schemes like the Tuition Fee Waiver and the Swami Vivekananda Merit Cum Means Scholarship. Placements are robust, with 70-80% of students placed annually. The highest package offered was 15 LPA in 2022, with an average of 4-6 LPA. Ceramic Technology stands out with a 100% placement rate, averaging 8.5 LPA. Major recruiters include TCS, Wipro, and Amazon. Students can start placements from the 6th semester, and internships offer stipends from 8k to 16k per month.

The faculty is highly qualified, though there's room for improvement in technology adoption. Overall, the college provides a cost-effective education compared to private institutions, with a supportive environment for financial aid and placements.

GCECT B.Tech CSE FAQs

Ques. Why should I choose GCECT for CSE over other private colleges in Kolkata?

Ans. GCECT is a government autonomous college with extremely low fees (total Rs. 17,801 for 4 years vs. Rs. 1.5-4 lakh/year at private colleges). It is autonomous under MAKAUT, meaning the curriculum and exams are managed internally, which students find more aligned with what is taught in class. The small batch size (30 students) ensures personalized attention from faculty.

Ques. What WBJEE rank do I need to get CSE at GCECT?

Ans. The WBJEE 2025 cutoff for CSE at GCECT (General category, Round 1) was approximately 3,011-4,216. For reserved categories, the cutoff is higher (more accessible). Students targeting GCECT CSE should aim for a WBJEE rank under 4,000-4,500 for a safe admission.

Ques. Is the placement cell active for CSE students at GCECT?

Ans. The placement cell at GCECT is primarily student-driven for CSE/IT departments. Mass recruiters like TCS, Wipro, Cognizant, and Infosys visit the campus. However, students are also encouraged to apply independently for placements and internships. IBM, Geotech, and TCS have also taken interns from GCECT in recent years.

Ques. Does GCECT offer any specialization within CSE at the B.Tech level?

Ans. GCECT follows the MAKAUT curriculum for CSE, which covers core computer science subjects. As an autonomous college, GCECT has some flexibility in curriculum design. The programme does not offer formal specializations at the B.Tech level, but students can focus on areas of interest through electives, projects, and club activities.

Ques. What is the hostel situation for CSE students at GCECT?

Ans. GCECT has a hostel for boys with limited capacity (approximately 30 students). Hostel allocation is subject to availability and is typically prioritized for students from outside Kolkata. The hostel charges approximately Rs. 1,000 per month including meals. Given the central Kolkata location, many students prefer nearby PGs or rented accommodations.

Ques. How does GCECT's autonomous status benefit CSE students?

Ans. As an autonomous college under MAKAUT, GCECT designs its own curriculum and conducts its own examinations. This means the questions in exams are directly based on what is taught in class, unlike affiliated colleges where university exams may have a disconnect from classroom teaching. Students find this system more fair and predictable, and it allows the college to update the curriculum more frequently to match industry needs.

The fee structure is different for different streams. For CSE, it requires 12400 per year. For IT,it is 24800 per year and for CT, it is 6200 per year. So the fees are very less as compared to other govt institutions (except JU). As fees are very low, I think that no one will face any kind of problem regarding the fee structure. Beside this, students who get SVMCM scholarship, have to keep this in mind that if you get any backlog, your scholarship will be cancelled. Currently I'm a student and I didn't take any kind of job roles but I will definitely try in future.
