IISWBM Ph.D. FAQs
Ques. What is the Research Eligibility Test (RET) and what does it cover?
Ans. The RET is a 100-mark written examination of 3 hours duration designed to assess research aptitude. It covers three modules: Quantitative and Logical Reasoning (40% weightage), Public Systems, Social Welfare and Management Issues (30% weightage), and the research proposal selected by the candidate as per their area of research (30% weightage). The qualifying marks for the RET are 50 out of 100.
Ques. Am I eligible for the Ph.D. program if I have a Master's degree with 50% marks?
Ans. Candidates with 50% marks are eligible only if they belong to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer), differently-abled, or other eligible categories as per UGC guidelines. General category candidates require a minimum of 55% marks in their Master's degree. Additionally, candidates who obtained their Master's degree prior to September 19, 1991, may also be eligible for the 5% relaxation.
Ques. What are the research areas available in the Ph.D. program?

Ques. Can I pursue the Ph.D. on a part-time basis while working?
Ans. Yes, IISWBM offers both full-time and part-time Ph.D. options. Part-time scholars can balance their professional commitments with research work. However, the minimum duration remains 3 years, and scholars must maintain regular contact with their supervisors and the institute. The part-time fees are 4,75,000 for the entire duration.
Ques. What happens if I cannot complete my Ph.D. within 3 years?
Ans. Scholars can remain enrolled for up to 6 years to complete their Ph.D. After the initial 3 years, if the thesis is not submitted, scholars continue to pay only semester registration fees and half of the tuition fees until thesis submission, with the upper limit being 6 years from enrollment.
Ques. Are there any fellowship opportunities available for Ph.D. scholars at IISWBM?
Ans. While IISWBM does not provide direct fellowships, the institute assists scholars in obtaining external funding from sources such as CSIR-UGC NET (JRF), DST-INSPIRE, and the Swami Vivekananda Merit-cum-Means Fellowship from the Government of West Bengal. Candidates with these fellowships receive preference during admission and are exempted from the written RET examination.
