SXCA BA (English) FAQs
Ques. Is there an entrance exam for BA English admission at St. Xavier's College, Ahmedabad?
Ans. No, there is no entrance exam for BA English at SXCA. Admission is purely merit-based, determined by your Class 12 percentage. However, from 2026-27, the college has joined the GCAS (Gujarat Common Admission System) portal, so students need to register on the GCAS portal first and then apply through the SXCA admission portal. Preference is given to students who have studied Arts subjects in Class 12, but students from other streams can also apply.
Ques. What is the difference between the Government Aided BA English and the Self-Financed BA English (Honours) at SXCA?
Ans. The Government Aided BA English is a 3-year programme with very low fees (Rs. 6,055-6,655 per semester) and morning batch timings (7:40 am). The Self-Financed BA English Honours is a 4-year programme (with a 3-year exit option) with fees of Rs. 32,000 per semester and afternoon batch timings (1:00 pm onwards). The Self-Financed programme offers different subject combinations including Theatre, Sociology, Psychology, and Economics as minors, and is more interdisciplinary. Both are full-time, on-campus programmes affiliated to Gujarat University.
Ques. How competitive is admission to BA English at SXCA? What percentage is typically required?
Ans. BA English at SXCA is highly competitive given the college's top-30 national ranking in Arts. While the official minimum eligibility is 50% in Class 12, the actual admission cutoff tends to be significantly higher due to demand. Students with 80%+ in Class 12 (Arts stream) generally have a better chance. The college publishes merit lists, and seats fill up quickly in Phase I itself. It is advisable to apply as early as possible once the portal opens.
Ques. Does SXCA's BA English programme have good career prospects? What can I do after this degree?
Ans. Yes, BA English from SXCA opens up a wide range of career paths. The curriculum's focus on critical thinking, communication, media studies, and literature prepares students for careers in content writing, journalism, mass communication, publishing, TESOL/language teaching, civil services, law, and higher education (MA/PhD). The Vocational specialisation in English Language and Communication Skills and Media Studies is particularly valued by media and communication employers. Many alumni pursue MA English (offered at SXCA itself) or competitive exams after graduation.
Ques. Is hostel accommodation guaranteed for BA English students at SXCA?
Ans. No, hostel accommodation is not guaranteed. The Men's Hostel on campus has only 168 total seats with just 40 new admissions per year, and the Ladies Hostel (1 km from campus) has 144 seats. Both hostels are primarily meant for students from rural areas and economically backward classes. The number of applications far exceeds available seats. Students must apply separately for hostel admission after securing college admission. It is strongly recommended to arrange alternative accommodation in Ahmedabad if hostel admission is not secured.
Ques. Can I switch from the 3-year BA English (Aided) to the 4-year Honours programme mid-way?
Ans. Under NEP 2020, SXCA offers multiple entry and exit options. However, switching between the Aided and Self-Financed programmes is generally not straightforward as they are separate programmes with different fee structures, timings, and subject combinations. Within the same programme, students can choose to continue for 4 years (Honours) instead of exiting after 3 years (Degree), subject to eligibility and seat availability. For specific queries about programme switching, students should contact the Department of English directly at english@sxca.edu.in.
