JGLS LLM FAQs

Q1. Why should I choose LLM (General Legal Studies) over a specialized LLM at JGLS?

A1. The LLM (General Legal Studies) is ideal if you are undecided about your area of specialization, want to explore multiple areas of law, or are planning to pursue a PhD/SJD and need a broad research foundation. It allows you to take elective courses from any specialization, giving you maximum flexibility. If you have a clear career goal in a specific area (e.g., corporate law, taxation, IPR), a specialized LLM would be more focused and career-relevant.

Q2. Can I take courses from multiple specializations in the LLM (General Legal Studies) programme?

A2. Yes, the LLM (General Legal Studies) is specifically designed to allow students to choose from a wide variety of subjects across all specializations. You can mix and match courses from Corporate Law, IPR, International Trade, Taxation, ADR, Human Rights, and Environmental Law, subject to seat availability and scheduling. This flexibility is the key differentiator of the General Legal Studies specialization.

Q3. Is the LLM (General Legal Studies) from JGLS recognized for PhD admissions at top universities?

A3. Yes, the LLM from JGLS (including General Legal Studies) is a recognized postgraduate law degree that meets the eligibility requirements for PhD admissions at most Indian and international universities. JGLS's strong research culture, mandatory publishable research paper, and global faculty connections make it an excellent preparation for doctoral studies. Many JGLS LLM graduates have gone on to pursue PhDs at leading universities in India, the US, UK, and Europe.

Q4. What is the mandatory research paper requirement in the LLM (General Legal Studies) programme?

A4. All LLM students at JGLS, including those in General Legal Studies, are required to complete a mandatory independent research paper of publishable quality. The paper must meet publishable standards and is closely supervised by a faculty member. This research component is a key differentiator of the JGLS LLM programme and provides students with valuable research skills and a potential publication for their academic portfolio.

Q5. Can working professionals apply for the LLM (General Legal Studies) at JGLS?

A5. The LLM (General Legal Studies) at JGLS is a full-time residential programme and is not designed for working professionals. Students are expected to be present on campus full-time for the duration of the programme. Working professionals interested in a flexible LLM may need to explore other institutions offering part-time or distance learning LLM programmes.

Q6. How does the LLM (General Legal Studies) at JGLS compare to LLM programmes at National Law Universities?

A6. JGLS is ranked No. 1 in India for Law by QS Rankings by Subject 2025, making it the top-ranked institution for an LLM in India. The programme's research-intensive environment, mandatory publishable research paper, global faculty from 50+ countries, and 575+ international collaborations give it a significant advantage over most NLU LLM programmes. The fee structure (Rs. 5,00,000 total tuition) is also competitive, and the scholarship programme covers more than 60% of students.
