JGLS LLM (ADR) FAQs

Ques. What is the scope of the LLM (ADR) from JGLS in India's growing arbitration ecosystem?

Ans. India is rapidly emerging as a global arbitration hub, with the Arbitration and Conciliation (Amendment) Act 2021 strengthening the arbitration framework and institutions like MCIA, DIAC, and NDIAC gaining prominence. The LLM (ADR) from JGLS prepares graduates for careers as arbitrators, mediators, and dispute resolution counsel in this growing ecosystem. JGLS's outstanding track record in international arbitration moots (Vis Vienna, Frankfurt Moot, Ian Fletcher Moot) gives graduates a practical edge.

Ques. Does the LLM (ADR) at JGLS cover online dispute resolution (ODR)?

Ans. Yes, the programme covers emerging areas including online dispute resolution (ODR), which has gained significant importance post-COVID. ODR platforms are increasingly being used for e-commerce disputes, consumer disputes, and small claims. JGLS's research centres and faculty are actively engaged in ODR research, and students benefit from this cutting-edge coverage.

Ques. Can I become a certified arbitrator or mediator after completing LLM (ADR) from JGLS?

Ans. The LLM (ADR) provides the academic foundation for a career in arbitration and mediation. To become a certified arbitrator, you may need to complete additional training and accreditation programmes offered by institutions like the Indian Council of Arbitration (ICA), the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb), or the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC). The LLM from JGLS is an excellent preparation for these accreditation programmes.

Ques. How does JGLS's mooting culture benefit LLM (ADR) students?

Ans. JGLS has one of the strongest mooting cultures in India, with outstanding performances at international arbitration moots including the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot (Vienna), the Frankfurt International Arbitration Moot, and the Ian Fletcher Insolvency Moot (London). LLM students can participate in these competitions, gaining practical experience in arbitration advocacy and building their professional network in the international arbitration community.

Ques. What is the difference between LLM (ADR) and LLM (International Trade and Investment Law) for students interested in investor-state arbitration?

Ans. The LLM (ADR) focuses on the procedural aspects of dispute resolution mechanisms including arbitration, mediation, and conciliation across all areas of law. The LLM (International Trade and Investment Law) focuses on the substantive law of international trade and investment, including investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS). Students interested in investor-state arbitration would benefit from both programmes, but the International Trade and Investment Law specialization provides deeper substantive knowledge of the underlying legal frameworks.

Ques. Is the LLM (ADR) from JGLS recognized internationally for a career in international commercial arbitration?

Ans. Yes, the LLM from JGLS is recognized internationally, and JGLS's global reputation (ranked No. 1 in India and 78th globally for Law by QS 2025) enhances the degree's international recognition. JGLS's collaborations with leading international arbitration institutions and law schools, combined with its strong mooting track record, make the LLM (ADR) a strong credential for a career in international commercial arbitration.
