What does a Construction Estimator do?

A construction estimator’s job mainly involves analyzing and planning the costs of construction projects of various kinds. The major duties of a construction estimator include the following:

  • Preparing estimates of probable cost and expenditure on materials, equipment, labor, contracts for assigned construction projects.
  • Establishing and advising on tendering processes, examining, analyzing, and maintaining them.
  • Preparing a directory of suppliers, contractors, and subcontractors for construction project managers is a very significant duty.
  • Preparing economic feasibility studies according to adjustments and changes to cost estimates of materials, labour, etc.
  • Consult and contact engineers, contractors, subcontractors, architects, and other people involved in construction projects.
  • Monitoring cost inflation, exchange rates, and keeping track of expenditure statements throughout the project at regular intervals.
  • They draw up bids for work.
  • Researching prices, collecting quotes and preparing accurate price lists for all the work needed on the assigned construction project.
  • Considering risk assessments as well as health and safety requirements.

Steps to follow

To start with the career as construction estimator students should follow the steps mentioned below-

  • Decision Making: Before pursuing a career, an aspiring construction estimator should plan to choose the correct subject combination from the school level and go through the right process of learning that can help in their professional fields. Acquiring technical certifications is an important decision to upgrade skills. Decisions about being a construction estimator or any other profession in the field of construction should be made early so that a suitable path can be followed to gain optimum qualification and expertise.
  • Subject Choices: Choosing the right subjects gives a correct base for any career. Construction estimators should choose subject combinations that include mathematics, physics, business and management studies, economics, computer applications, and other related subjects. Engineering is a good career choice at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels for aspiring estimators. Construction management courses are the most beneficial for spring construction estimators in college. Students can also do research at post doctorate level to get specialized in the field.
  • Entrance Exam Preparation: Although their job is entirely based on their Bachelor’s degree, desirable skills, and experience in the field, there are a number of entrance exams that candidates appear in for a good educational qualification in construction management studies. Some accepted entrance exams in this field are JEE Mains, GATE, CEPT, NATA, etc.
  • Selecting Correct Colleges: Selecting the right colleges that perfectly fit with a student’s career choices is very important. Specialized courses in construction help candidates with gaining a lot of theoretical as well as practical knowledge. Some of the institutes in India that offer construction management and related courses are NICMAR in Pune, RICS School of Built Environment, Amity University in Noida, Adani Institute of Infrastructure in Gujarat, School of Planning and Architecture in Delhi etc.
  • After Qualifying Exam: Qualified candidates need to go through the formalities of the respective entrance exams they appeared for. They shall be selected on the basis of their merit scored in such exams. Students opt for a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in relevant subjects like Structural Engineering, Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Economics, Business studies, etc. The minimum educational qualification required for this job is a Bachelor’s degree and good fieldwork experience. Hence, aspiring estimators need to acquire certifications and a lot of practical experience to get a good job in the field.

Types of Construction Estimators

Construction estimation depends on a number of factors like the accuracy of available information, understanding categories of cost estimates, resources, etc. Cost estimation of different construction projects are of various categories and construction estimators are categorized according to these divisions. Some of these cost estimation categories are given below:

  • Preliminary Cost Estimate: This is an abstract or rough calculation of cost or budget estimate usually done in the initial stages of a construction project. Estimates of items like cost of land, construction supplies, cost of roads, cost of electric and water supply, etc. are done in this process usually with reference to cost of similar types of projects. This is a major stage for a construction estimator in a project since this decides the financial position, budgeting, and administering the project by the competent sanctioning authority.
  • Plinth Area Cost Estimate: This is done by estimating construction costs based on the plinth area rate of the construction site. The calculation is done by multiplying the plinth area of a building with the plinth area rate. This is done for multi-storeyed buildings, estimated separately for each storey, and does not apply to open spaces or courtyards.
  • Cube Rate Cost Estimate: This is a comparatively more accurate estimation method than the plinth area method. It is calculated by multiplying the plinth area with the height of the building. The rate is measured based on costs of similar buildings in the locality.
  • Approximate Quantity Cost Estimate: The calculation for this method involves multiplying the total wall length of the construction project with the rate per running meter. This gives the cost of the structure. The rate per running meter is measured separately for superstructure and foundation.
  • Detailed Cost Estimate: This method is used when the competent authority approves the preliminary cost estimates of a construction project. This is a very accurate and finalizing step that decides rates and costs of each item of work separately. Detailed estimate includes works like reporting, detailed specifications, drawing plans, designing, calculations, etc.
  • Revised Cost Estimate: This step is conducted when there is a sudden surge in the cost of materials, items, labour, etc. of 5% or more from the original sanctioned estimate. The reason for revision must be mentioned.
  • Supplementary Cost Estimate: This is done for a detailed cost estimate for additional works required during the process of construction. The estimate sheet must contain the originally sanctioned estimate as well as the total work cost including the supplementary cost of work during the process.
  • Annual Repair Cost Estimate: Also known as annual maintenance estimate, this is prepared to estimate the maintenance costs of a building to keep it in a safe condition. Factors of maintenance include painting, whitewashing, repairs, etc. that are needed from time to time.

Ques. Should I choose NSIT CSE or IIT Delhi Civil?

● Top Answer By Shrija on 09 Jul 24

Ans. I am a Civil Engineering student at IIT Delhi.  Even though CoE/ CSE/ IT are much more sought after by students in the present times, I would choose Civil at IIT Delhi over CoE at NSUT.  Here are the reasons for the same: The faculty at IIT Delhi is much more experienced and learned than that at NSUT. IIT Delhi was established in 1961, while NSUT in 1983. Because of this, IIT Delhi has a stronger alumni network. IIT Delhi is a globally recognized brand, while NSUT is usually only known to students of North India. The “IIT” brand is immensely helpful when applying to foreign universities for higher studies.  Although civil freshers are rarely in demand, a civil engineer with enough work experience, the right set of skills, and great project accomplishments is paid a high salary. These are the 2023 placement figures for both these institutions: Particulars IIT DELHI  NSUT  Median CTC -   INR 17 LPA (B.Tech) Average CTC INR 17.60 LPA (Overall)   - % Batch placed 84.94% (Overall)   (Students Placed in B.Tech: 977) Top Recruiters   Google, Deloitte, BCG, HCL Technologies, Lenskart, Flipkart, etc.    (2024) Unfortunately, the branch-wise placement detail is not available for both these institutes.    However, based on the various reasons listed above, I would recommend you choose IIT Delhi Civil Engineering over NSUT CoE.Read more
