There are two routes through which a candidate can apply for Sainik schools 40% and 60%. To apply for new Sainik schools under the 40% route following eligibility criteria must be satisfied by a student:
- A student should be between the ages of 10 to 12 years as of March 2025 and should be born between April 1, 2012, to March 31, 2025.
To apply under the 60% route, a student needs to satisfy the following eligibility criteria for admission to Sainik schools:
- A student must be under the age of 10 to 12 years as of March 31, 2025, for admission in class 6th and should have been born between April 1, 2012, to March 31, 2014.

The procedure of examination for girls is the same as for boys, both need to apply for AISSEE 2025 and must be Indian citizens. girls are only eligible to take admission in class 6th. There are a total of 51 Sainik school campuses located in different states which have been opened by the Ministry of Education since 1961 with an aim to prepare students physically and mentally ready to enroll for INA or NDA. Previously only boys were eligible to apply for AISSEE but in 2020 our respected prime minister declared that girls are also eligible to be admitted in Sainik schools for class 6 only. AISSEE Admission is done through the process of e-counseling based on the marks obtained by the student through the AISSEE Examination Under the NTA. AISSEE is administered offline for up to three hours, in which a student needs to mark their answer on an OMR sheet, followed by a written examination, a medical examination, and a personal interview.
