Class 6 Maths Chapter 12 Ratio and Proportion: Important Topics
The important topics of class 6 maths chapter 12 include the following:
- Ratio – When two similar quantities are compared, it is called Ratio. It is denoted by the symbol ( : ).
Two quantities can be compared only if they are in same units. Equivalent ratios can be determined by multiplying or dividing the numerator and denominator by the same number.
- Proportion – When two ratios are equal, they are said to be in proportion. It is denoted by the symbol ( :: ).
The four quantities (two ratios), in a proportion, are called terms. The first and fourth terms are called extreme terms while the second and third terms are known as middle terms.
- Unitary Method – Unitary method is the method in which value of the required number of units are found after calculating the value of one unit.
For example, if we are given that 10 pens cost Rs 100 and we need to find the cost of 5 pens, then we will first find the cost of one pen i.e. 100/10 = 10 Rs. When the value of one unit is known, we can multiply it with the required number of units i.e. 10 × 5 = 50 Rs.
