Kiel University (CAU) offers admissions in two main intakes every year. The first intake is the Winter Semester (October) and the second is the Summer Semester (April). The Winter intake is the main intake, with the highest number of available programs. The Summer intake is more limited and is mostly available for selected undergraduate and master’s courses.
The application process for the university is applied through Uni-Assist. Hochschulstart (another portal for applying) is also preferred, but less so compared to Uni-Assist. The most common courses, like engineering, business, and computer science is applied through Uni-Assist or the university portal.

So, Indian students mainly need to manage their living expenses along with the mandatory semester fee. About 91- 92% of programs have open acceptance if basic requirements are met. Only 8-9% are restricted, with an estimated acceptance rate around 47%.
Indian students should also note that most courses at Kiel University are taught in German. Only a few master’s programs are fully taught in English. University of Kiel Admission Decision
Kiel University review application after the official deadline for each intake. In most cases, students receive an admission decision within 4 to 8 weeks after the application deadline, provided all required documents are submitted correctly. However, processing time may vary depending on the course, number of applicants, and peak admission periods.
International students, especially Indian applicants, are strongly advised to apply early and submit complete documents, as additional time is needed after admission for APS verification, blocked account arrangements, and visa processing.
Kiel University generally does not charge tuition fees, but admitted students must pay a semester contribution fee to confirm enrollment. This fee covers the public transport ticket, student services, and social contributions.
Students on Reddit suggest that some applicants receive decisions within a few weeks after the deadline, while others may wait longer during high-demand intakes like the Winter Semester. Delays are usually due to document verification or a high volume of applications.
Overall, Kiel University offers a clear and structured admission process for Indian students. By meeting academic eligibility, securing the APS certificate, arranging financial proof, and fulfilling language requirements, students can smoothly complete their admission and visa process. With affordable education and strong academic programs, Kiel University is a great option for Indian students planning to study in Germany.

- The overall good part about a German University is the education is for free, being an expat that makes me happy.
- I feel glad to be part of my research training group - TransEvo where I have the opportunity to discuss my ideas with equally enthusiastic PhD students and work interdisciplinary.
Dislikes
- The German official paper works are always in German language, I had to accept that because I am in Germany, and the translation for every single document is not available. Sometimes it takes a while to tackle official paperwork.
