The University of Siegen (Universität Siegen) was founded in 1972 in Siegen, North Rhine-Westphalia, a mid-sized city in western Germany, roughly equidistant between Cologne and Frankfurt. It is a public research university with approximately 15,000 students across 5 faculties, offering 140+ degree programmes in engineering, computer science, business, natural sciences, humanities, and health sciences. For Indian students, the most important fact is straightforward: Siegen charges zero tuition fees. The only mandatory payment is a semester contribution of approximately €330 (~₹35,987) per semester, which includes a regional public transport pass.
- Siegen ranks #1201–1400 in QS World University Rankings 2026 and #501–600 in THE World University Rankings 2026 — placing it 42nd among all German universities by THE.
- The university has shown a consistent upward trend in THE rankings, improving its overall score year-on-year.
- For Indian students comparing options, Siegen sits in a practical mid-tier bracket: more accessible than TU Munich or Heidelberg.
- It has lower living costs than Hamburg or Frankfurt, and a strong engineering and computer science focus that aligns directly with what most Indian applicants are seeking.
Siegen's Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science is the primary draw for Indian students. The university offers a dedicated International Master in Computer Science — fully in English, with three specialisations (Embedded Systems, Visual Computing, Complex and Intelligent Software Systems) — and an MSc Mechatronics that is among the most applied-to programmes by Indian engineering graduates.
Current Admission Scenario: The MSc Computer Science application window for non-EU students (Winter Semester 2026/27) runs 1 January to 30 April — this deadline is earlier than most German universities. Students who missed it should target other English-taught programmes with the standard 15 July 2026 deadline.

Is University of Siegen Free for Indian Students?
Yes. Siegen is a public university in North Rhine-Westphalia — a state that has not introduced non-EU tuition fees. Indian students pay only the semester contribution of approximately €330 (~₹35,987) per semester, confirmed on the official university website (uni-siegen.de).
What the semester contribution covers:
- Administrative and student services fees
- Studierendenwerk social contribution (canteen, housing support, counselling)
- Regional public transport pass (Semesterticket): €208.80 — covers buses and trains across the Siegen region
Annual total university cost: €660 (₹71,973). No additional fees for standard degree programmes.
Key insights: Students who register their main residence (Hauptwohnsitz) in Siegen receive a reimbursement of €176.40 of the mobility fee from the city of Siegen. Present your registration certificate and enrollment proof to the AStA office after arrival. Key Insight: The MSc Computer Science programme includes a short entry test and telephone interview for shortlisted applicants — not widely advertised on third-party sites. Prepare to demonstrate subject knowledge in your chosen specialisation. A CGPA of 7.5/10 is the realistic minimum. Lower GPAs have been rejected even with strong IELTS scores, as confirmed by applicants on r/studying_in_germany.
Is University of Siegen Hard to Get Into?
The overall acceptance rate is approximately 60% — making Siegen one of the more accessible German universities for international students. Only 5.7% of programmes have a Numerus Clausus (NC) restriction. Most programmes are open-admission for qualified applicants.
What this means for Indian students: A 60% overall rate is genuinely accessible. However, the MSc Computer Science programme is more competitive than the overall rate suggests — it receives a high volume of applications from Indian students and includes an interview round. Students with CGPA 7.5+ and IELTS 6.5 have a realistic chance at MSc CS. Students with CGPA below 7.0 should target MSc Business Analytics or MSc Economic Policy, which have lower competition from engineering applicants.
Acceptance Rate Trend 2024–2026
| Year | Overall Acceptance Rate | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | ~60% | Stable |
| 2025 | ~60% | Stable |
| 2026 | ~60% | MSc CS more competitive due to high Indian applicant volume |
Decision framework: If your CGPA is 7.5+ with IELTS 6.5, MSc Computer Science (Embedded Systems or CISS specialisation) is a realistic target. If CGPA is 6.5–7.4, apply to MSc Mechatronics or MSc Electrical Engineering — similar industry value with slightly lower competition. If your background is business or economics, MSc Business Analytics is the strongest English-taught option at Siegen.
University of Siegen Fees and Cost of Living 2026
Total annual university cost: €660 (₹71,973). That is the only mandatory payment.
Siegen is a significantly cheaper city than Hamburg, Frankfurt, or Munich — one of its key practical advantages for Indian students on a budget. The table below gives a realistic monthly breakdown based on official university estimates and student-reported figures.

| Food (self-cooked + canteen) | €150–€250 | ₹16,358–₹27,263 |
| Public transport | €0 (included in semester contribution) | ₹0 |
| Health insurance (mandatory) | €110–€120 | ₹11,996–₹13,086 |
| Phone/internet | €20–€30 | ₹2,181–₹3,272 |
| Miscellaneous | €60–€100 | ₹6,543–₹10,905 |
| Total (budget) | €700–€900 | ₹76,335–₹98,145 |
| Total (comfortable) | €900–€1,100 | ₹98,145–₹1,19,955 |
First-year total budget (fees + living): €9,060–€13,860 (₹9.88–₹15.12 lakh/year)
This is notably lower than Hamburg (₹11.3–₹19.2 lakh/year) or Frankfurt (₹12–₹20 lakh/year), making Siegen one of the most affordable study destinations in western Germany.
Blocked account: Indian students need €11,904 (~₹12.98 lakh) in a German blocked account (Sperrkonto) to obtain a student visa. This is released at €992/month after arrival — it is not spent upfront. Providers: Coracle, Expatrio, Fintiba. Set up after receiving your admission letter.
University of Siegen Campus and Student Life
Siegen's campus is spread across multiple city locations. The Unteres Schloss (Lower Castle) campus serves as the main hub for humanities and business. The Emmy-Noether-Campus (ENC) houses engineering and natural sciences.
Key facilities and student life highlights:
- University Library (UB Siegen): Multi-site library with digital access, extended hours, and subject-specific reading rooms
- Studierendenwerk Siegen: Manages 976 dormitory places across several halls; subsidised canteen meals from €2–€4; student counselling and financial aid
- Hochschulsport: Wide range of sports activities at student rates
- International Student Advisory (ISA): Dedicated support for international students — visa guidance, orientation, buddy programme
- AStA (Student Union): Organises cultural events, language tandems, and social activities
City reality: Siegen is a small city (~100,000 population) in a scenic hilly region. It is quieter than Hamburg or Frankfurt but has lower costs and a tight-knit student community. Indian students report a growing Indian community, Indian grocery availability, and regular cultural events. The city's proximity to Cologne (1 hour by train) and Frankfurt (1.5 hours) means weekend access to major cities is straightforward — and the Semesterticket covers regional transport.
Housing tip: Apply for Studierendenwerk dormitories immediately after receiving your admission letter. With only 976 places for 15,000 students, demand significantly exceeds supply. WG-Gesucht.de and Immobilienscout24.de are the primary platforms for private shared flats.

FAQs — University of Siegen
Ques. Is University of Siegen good for computer science?
Ans. Yes, particularly for students targeting embedded systems, visual computing, or intelligent software. The International MSc Computer Science is fully in English with three specialisations and includes a dedicated mentoring programme with a strong student-to-faculty ratio. The programme has active links to automotive and industrial electronics research. However, it is more competitive than Siegen's overall acceptance rate suggests — a CGPA of 7.5+ and IELTS 6.5 are realistic minimums for Indian applicants. The programme also includes a short entry test and interview, which most third-party guides do not mention.
Ques. What is the MSc Computer Science deadline at University of Siegen?
Ans. The MSc Computer Science application window for non-EU students (including Indian applicants) runs 1 January to 30 April each year — for Winter Semester only. There is no Summer Semester intake for this programme. This deadline is earlier than most German universities. Students who miss the 30 April deadline must wait for the next cycle. Other programmes like MSc Mechatronics and MSc Electrical Engineering follow the standard 15 July deadline.
Ques. Is Siegen a good city for Indian students?
Ans. Siegen is a small, affordable city (~100,000 population) with a growing Indian student community. Monthly living costs of €700–€900 are realistic — significantly lower than Hamburg, Frankfurt, or Munich. The city is quiet but well-connected: Cologne is 1 hour away, Frankfurt 1.5 hours, both accessible with the Semesterticket. Indian grocery stores and cultural associations are present. Students seeking a large Indian community or big-city environment should consider Hamburg or Frankfurt instead.
Ques. Does University of Siegen require German for MSc programmes?
Ans. For the MSc Computer Science (International), no German is required — the programme is fully in English. The university website mentions "English/German" because a small number of elective courses are in German, but a full degree can be completed in English. For MSc Mechatronics and MSc Electrical Engineering, some courses may be in German — basic German (A2–B1) is recommended. For daily life in Siegen, basic German is practically useful as the city is less internationally oriented than Hamburg or Berlin.
Ques. Can Indian students get a job in Germany after University of Siegen?
Ans. Yes. German graduates receive an 18-month Job Seeker Visa after completing their degree, allowing them to stay and find work without a prior job offer. Siegen's strong industry integration score in THE rankings reflects active employer partnerships — particularly with automotive, engineering, and technology companies in the Cologne-Frankfurt corridor. German language skills (B2 level) significantly improve job search outcomes. English-only roles exist at multinationals but are fewer in the Siegen region than in Frankfurt or Hamburg.
